CDR-220: Fighting bling, one radio at a time...

I have the german equivalent of the Porsche CDR23 in my GTS. It's a Becker DTM (actually has navigation capability in Europe). It has all the appearance of the CDR23, but not the MOST system requirements. Southwest Stereo has the Becker Monaco which also looks like the CDR23. You might want to look at that for consideration. In my opinion, looks and sounds perfect in a 928 (and I've had the Blpnkt Toronto, Nakmichi MB VI, and the CDR-220 radios in current/previous cars).

I have an Eclipse in ruby but I want to put in my Nakamichi cd400 anyone have a faceplate for one for sale?
Woofersetc has been running the same auction on fleabay for a year but will not take less than $189 which is outrageous (when I did not need one they were $50 or less!)
thanks

Hi Jim,
I reside in Australia and have for some time been trying to locate a replacement Becker non-angled faceplate BAS-1296 for my Porsche CDR 220 which will of course would solve my bling problem.
Becker Australia doesn`t seem to know what I`m talking about and while Beckersound NJ has some they are currently retaing these for their CDR 220 refurbishment programme.
I had just about to give up when I found your post advising there was a solution.
If you can assist I would appreciate pm contact details with a view to working out an arrangement.
Appreciate your assistance.

So now I will probably upset a few here that are searching for the "factory" look at the expense of head advances of the last 20 to 30 years.
I went with a 2010 Clarion NZ500 that has all the bells and whistles.
General features:
* navigation receiver with internal amp (18 watts RMS CEA-2006/40 watts peak x 4 channels)
* 7" motorized touchscreen
* fits single-sized openings
* built-in GPS with 12 million points of interest
* built-in Bluetooth for phones and music streaming
* wireless remote
*
Audio/visual features:
* plays CDs, CD-R/RW, DVDs, DVD-Rs/RWs, DVD+Rs/RWs, MP3/WMAs on CD, DVD, and USB thumb drive
* 24-bit digital-to-analog converter
* built-in iPod control — Clarion's optional adapter required for viewing video content
* 2-band parametric equalizer with 11 tone presets
*
Expandability:
* works with Clarion HD Radio tuner, SIRIUS satellite radio tuner
* inputs: rear USB input, one A/V input, rear-view camera input
* outputs: video output, 6-channel preamp outputs (2-volt front/rear/subwoofer)
*
Other information:
* CEA-2006 compliant
* compatible with most factory steering wheel audio controls (adapter required)
* warranty: 1 year

I just believe that when it left the "factory" is when it was original and true and only then. The day anything was changed, repaired, upgraded; be it tires, brakes, performance chips, TB, WP, air intakes, etc., it is no longer true "factory".
OK, I am ready for the upheaval but look at the photos and read the link before you blast away.

Thank you Dan.
This is still a work in progress. The most difficult issue is getting parts and making things work together. It is not "factory" but it is now, 2010 and I hope it will be Wow.
I have made two sacrifices in this total upgrade.
The first is that I need to find a place for the tire compressor taken out of the spare. A small loss of space somewhere in the car's interior.
The second is that I didn't want to settle for 4" speakers that "fit". I need to use depth extender rings to use large woofer and tweeter speakers. Also, the system will have real 6.5" sub woofers in the "factory" location. I would have liked the 12" to 15" subs but didn't want to use more trunk space.
BTW the price at Crutchfield is a little more than twice if purchased elsewhere.

Jim's excellent mod
I'd just like to say I had Jim perform his mod on my CDR-220, and it is first class in every way. Without the mod, the display was practically unreadable when installed in my 78 911SC. After the mod, it is clearly readable, even in strong direct sunlight. (See before and after photos below.) I prefer the orange letters against dark background to the reversed display you get with the non-polarized faceplate. Jim installed a tiny potentiometer accessible through a tiny neatly drilled hole in the backside of the faceplate so you can tweak the viewing angle from 20 degrees below to +30 or so degrees above, but so far I have left it just where Jim set it. Photos show before and after straight-on (perpendicular) viewing angle. Horizontal viewing angle doesn't seem to make much difference. Opening the flip-down panel does interfere slightly with the SC's ***** (everything is SO compact on this car!), but I rarely play CDs, mostly my MP3/ iPod via PIE's BLAU/8-3NPUT auxiliary input cable. And the sound is a definite upgrade from the original Blaupunkt 3001. Strongly recommended. By the way, I only know of Jim and his magic through this post. Phil

James,
I put one of those pop out screen Clarion's in my T'bird. I like it pretty well. The newest one has Bluetooth which mine does not have, but other than that I think they are the same. I wish you could change the color of the buttons from blue to other colors to match the lights in the car. That is really the only complaint I have.
Phil, you should meet Jim in person! He and his wife are some of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet! Great folks!

The adapter has been ordered from SW Stereo and will be here in a couple of days. The Transmission has arrived from 928Intl to my mechanics shop and the S4 will be back on the road in less than 2 weeks! SO EXCITED! Love my S4! Can't wait to get in and drive it again!!!!
Thanks to Jim C. for all the hard work making the CDR220 work again, I can't wait to get that in the car as well! SWEET!!! Pics and updates to come!

Jim, Mr. Jim Wellman came over this PM to help w/ the change over to the CDR220... unfortunately the DIN cable fell apart in his hands as he was removing it from the CD2. Do you know if that is a fairly standard DIN cable? If so I can probably find it at Fry's...
Thanks Jim W. for your help tonight. Hope we will get it finished up on Saturday!

James-
If it's the factory head unit to amp cable, it's not a standard DIN cable, it has 8 pins. Here's the pinout of the male end that plugs into the CD-2 (the female end is Stefan's adapter)
PET sucks for audio information. My GT has option M691 (listed as a CD-1) but it came with a CD-2 in it (though that unit was a warranty replacement in 1993). It lists the same head unit-to- amp cable for 89-91 (928 645 172 00), so maybe that's the DIN cable you need. There's also a CD-2 installation kit (928 645 019 01) but I'd be surprised if any still exist....

Short answer: No. But maybe one of the '91's that Mark just got in still has its factory HU-to-amp cable in it, or he's got one in stock already.
Their website does list a used 928 645 172 00 cable for $25. *** I'm not positive that's the right cable,*** but no downside to calling and asking Mark or Tom.
