Delrin Rack Bushings-What a difference!
I've been searching about every thread I could find lately on any and all information I could get on tramlining, wandering, vague steering, loose at center, etc. With all this info, I've been trying to figure out why the hell the GTS never had really sharp, quick steering like the 79 had.
Went to Brad Webster's yesterday and we got the GTS up in the air. Roger came over and we inspected pretty much everything in the front suspension. Even the rack bushings "looked" good on first observation.
We proceeded to remove the bushings and we were able to just push the old ones right out. I'm not talking with a press, I'm talking with our hands. They were funky rubber bushings with a steel sleeve in the middle and we just pushed all 4 out. He had brought a set of Delrin bushings with him, so we installed them, buttoned her up and I got on the road to get back home.
Wow!!! What a difference!!
The car felt "new"!! That's probably the best way I could describe it.
The vagueness and loose feeling went away, the steering was nice and tight.
The road that Roger and Brad live off used to make my car tramline like a **** and it was straight as an arrow!!
Great upgrade for cheap!! If you're thinking about doing it (hell, even if you're not thinking about doing it) do it!!
Roger, Brad,
Thanks for the help guys, apreciate it!!

Chuck..... thank you for posting this. I've been trying to figure out ways to improve the steering and this may be just the ticket.
Did it make the ride harsher and or do you notice any additional vibration in the steering wheel? We have some bumpy roads over here and I need to be careful with what I change.

Afshin,
Funny you should say that. After I figured out how much better the car tracked, steered, etc, I said, ok, now let's see if I can find any downside with these things.
NO vibration or harshness in the wheel, ride, etc.
John Curry put Roger's aluminum ones in the other week and saw the same type of improvement. He said he felt no vibration in the wheel either, but I wanted to go a little more conservative with the Delrin.
I'm just still amazed at the improvement. Think new motor mounts vs old collapsed ones. That's about the best analogy of improvement that I might have in terms of my steering!! Your bushings may be in better shape so you may feel an improvement, but maybe not to the scale of what I felt.

Thanks for the feedback Chuck. I have a set of Delrins sitting on the shelf awaiting install. Perhaps I'll get brave enoungh to attempt the install myself.

Jarrod,
Do you have the new design using 8 bushes?
If not send the set of 4 back and I will relace them with the new set.
We now have the "Ultimate" set of Delrin & Aluminium rack bushings for sale for $70.
Price has risen due to there being 8 bushes instead of 4.
The new design negates any verticle movement in the rack unlike the more common design of using of four bushes.

Wow Rog, I like those. Had no idea that was the direction you were going. Well done my friend.
Looks like I missed another fun tech session.

Excellent Chuck, very much appreciate the feedback.
I will be adding these to my spring parts order along with ball cup and a few other goodies.

I replaced the OE type bushings in my '89 track car last summer, and it indeed made a big difference inthe precision of steering. I have another set to put in the '94 this winter - but may make the swap with Roger!!!, if he's willing to do that one too.
Great improvement - even IF the original type bushings are in fairly good shape. WONDERFUL if they are deteriorated like Chuck's apparently were.

Anyone know why Porsche didn't do this to begin with?
Are there any drawbacks or possible increased wear to other components by using these?
