I vote for the fuel pump and/or fuel filter. Mine just did the same thing, reversing the polarity on the electrical connections freed up the jambed main pump, but the internal pump was DOA. Also the connecting hose had failed (2nd pic). Replaced them both as a safety precaution. I also opened up the fuel filter to find the filtering media almost completly black. (1st pic)
Lets try this again with pics.

Let's all post pictures of our failed internal fuel pump. Now I think I should have gone the Andrew Olson route. Good luck Cheryl, I'm sure Randy has got this one.

Bump, Just got off the phone with Randy. The car is at his local wrench and both pumps have been replaced and the car is running......but. It's blowing huge amounts of black smoke. We talked about a few of the possibilities..

I would swap the Brains into a known good running car and see if the problem transfers
Of course there is also the question what was the last thing you fixed??
Is this car a NA car or is it boosted??
Could the wire connection have come off the MAF or possibly a loose intake connection. What do the coil wires look like, remove both of them and inspect the ends

Stan, it's Joe's supercharged car. All that was changed were the fuel pumps. New internal, 044 pump and filter. He's in the middle of BFE. I dont know what has been done to the brains on this one, but suppose swapping the brains from his other GTS 'might' assist.

Does the car run the same or worse with the MAF disconnected?
Limp-home mode (no MAF signal present at LH) is hugely rich by default and would cause black clouds of soot.
Being a boosted car, its gonna be a little tricky to remote diagnose..
Frankly it might well be cheaper to fly someone out to the car who's familiar with boosted 928's, tuning, and has a Sharktuner II.

My GT when it had the rear turbo on there did similar when the MAF was messed up. I'd check there first...try running it without the MAF connected and if it runs better (default allows for idle and about 3k rpm..get home mode) then that is the issue.
Good Luck,

Fortunately we have the stock '93 we can swap parts on if need be. Thanks, guys for all your suggestions. I'll go into town on Monday with a list of things to try. I'll let y'all know what we find out.
Gracias!

Make sure the MAF is seated well and bolted down into the boot. If it pushes out, the car will be metering for a lot more air than what it is getting, running pretty rich and rough. You can usually look through the intake manifold on the driver's side with a flashlight to check.
