Default Moving to Arizona

Not 100% official yet, but more or less. I am currently living in Norfolk, Nebraska, and I will be taking both my 924 and 928 with me, no questions asked. It's apprx. 20 hour drive there. Both would be driven simultaneously.

What should I conduct, to prepare for this lengthy trip? I want to avoid being stranded, at all costs. Would extra stuff should I collect etc.

Also, how many of you live in Arizona? I will be moving to Chandler/Scottsdale.

Hi, relays... relays and relay jumper “y” cable, DVM.
Check the fuses before you leave. If your belts and fluids (leaks sorted out) are all in good shape it should be a fun run.

When is the last time either of these seen the highway, may want to have tires balanced.

Here’s wishing all goes well w/ your trip

There is a pretty decent sized 928 group here in AZ (AZ Desert Sharks - we even have a shirt) we havene't been as active collectively over the last couple of years locally - but we usually have a group attend Sharktoberfest every year (and previously Devek Days..) and the OCIC's and will usually meet up with anyone travelling through town. We had a lunch and about 6 cars when Dwayne rolled though with the Holbert car, and have met up with Marc/Teri, Keith & Nicole when they have been in town.

We've dome some drives & dinners over the years and the local PCA is pretty active with driving events, there are even a few race cars.

The annual PCA Phoenix Flight shows usually have several 928's in Concours and Display classes as well as other attendee only vistors.

There are a few other regular cars shows here - and we sometimes turn out for these... mostly we just need a good excuse to actually get together...

Scottsdale Porsche is actually one of the better dealers (wrt 928's) though we all mostly use good independant shops. Exotic Motorwerks is the favorite for our 928 crowd - Dan Warner & Yolanda Facio who run it are very 928 knowledgeable - its not very practical to work only on 928's but they come close...

Prior to departure - post a thread with your route and possible stay over locations.

Make sure that your tires are suitable for the road conditions. Summer tires on cold winter roads can get very exciting even without ice present. Otherwise, if the cars are ready to drive to the market they are ready to go to Arizona from Nebraska. Start talking to them now about it. Let them know that it's probably 50º warmer where they are going, road salt and rust will be behind them at the new place, and that there are lots of friendly folks there who will keep them company.

Otherswise, if your normal maintenance stuff is current, like fluids/belts/hoses/battery, there's probably not a lot to be said for carrying more than the few critical spare items that should probably be in the car all the time no matter what. A few extra 53B relays, the Y-jumper for the FP relay, a small meter and a fuse kit as others have stated.

Marc and Teri are in Wichita, there's a great crew around Denver including Stan (Mr. Merlin) who can help you out, several in Las Vegas including Tony H with tools and skills, and then you are in Arizona.

Post your plans and schedule, and listers will pop up to meet you along the way.

Oh, and bring summer clothes with you. Seriously. Your Nebraska winter duds will gather dust in Phoenix until you get tired of looking at them in storage. It was a tough adjustment when I did it between New England and SoCal. Took all of maybe a day or two. Bigger change in climate for you, might need allow an extra 'transition' day.

Drive safe, take your time, enjoy the ride and the scenery along the way.

Thanks guys!

It will be sometime around April-June that I would be moving. That gives me plenty of time to plan a course and stock up on the goods- and get my interior back into the car!

I'll be a little concerned about budget for the cars though. I won't be living on my own, but yet will be paying for everything on my own. I am only 19 as of now.

This will be a little complicated, since the 924 and 928 are the only cars I own, and it would suck if they both broke down.

Mechanically though, my 928 is in supreme condition. I had to replace a worn ignition switch recently, but she is real solid.

My 924 only has a good 45,000 miles on her, so she hasn't been too picky at all, but still, of course, has her needs where she has to sit and mope if I don't pay enough attention to her!

+1 on what Alan and Drew have already said.

I think you'll like the transition. My wife Diane is originally from Nebraska, and talking to her friends from Wahoo that have been snowed in a lot over the holidays, she's very glad to be in AZ! Yes, it does get a little warm here on occassion... but I've always felt it's easier to cool down than to warm up.

Either Scottsdale or Chandler are great places to live. You'll have a good 928 support group, one of the best 928 (and 924/944) mechanics around in Dan Warner at Exotic Motorwerks, and be able to drive your cars 365 days a year.

Another benefit in Scottsdale is you will be able to see, on an almost daily basis, more exotic cars than just about anywhere in the world. There's a once a month gathering in Scottsdale that has some amazing cars show up. From real Ferarri GTO's to Bugatti Veyrons. Incredible!

Have a safe trip, that time of year should be a breeze. Keep us posted on your timing. I'm sure there are lots of willing hands available on the way if you need them.

Yeah, this is going to be great. I'm excited to see that there are some mechanics that are specialized in my models field. The snow here right now is extremely painful. Can't drive either of my cars, and it's not fun! We still have sky-high snow packed everywhere and the roads are icy as hell. I have just been staying inside as much as possible lately. Kinda sucks. I don't mind the cold at all, but the snow can certainly go!

I actually just came back from Arizona 2 weeks ago. Was my second time being there. I am also excited to go down there, because I will be in a nice sized house. I'll be living with my sister, her boyfriend, and another friend. None of them care to garage their cars, so I will hopefully get the garage!

Hey, are there any tracks nearby too? I have always wanted to take my cars out and see what they can really tear up.

The one thing that wil lbe hard to leave behind is owning the entire town at night, in the summer. I always take my 924/928 out at 2:00a.m and NO ONE is ever on the streets, so I go for a wild ride, and enjoy the sight of being the road king! Muahahaha!

There are a couple great tracks to exercise your shark on in the Phoenix area. Firebird raceway (home of the Bob Bondurant school) has a couple tracks that local car clubs run on. The east track is used quite a bit by Indy car teams for testing on road courses as well. Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) also has a fantastic road course tied into part of the banked oval used for NASCAR and formerly Indy car. PCA runs club races here and Grand Am/Rolex Sports Car series used to run here as well.

Being tied into a car club that provided track events was one of the main reasons I joined PCA, although there are other car club groups that run these tracks as well. Most are open to all types of cars. PCA is primarily Porsche, but occassionally a stray BMW, Mercedes or Ferarri sneaks in. Track events are usually quite safe and are a BLAST. It's a great way legally and safely to get to know the limits of you and your car.
