Default Has anyone installed an amplified Bazooka Subwoofer?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to add a "little" extra bass to my '88 S4.

Currently, the car has a Pioneer CD/receiver and new front door (4") and back speakers (6.5"). To do a better job with the bass, I am looking at the Bazooka Amplified Subwoofer, 6-inch or 8-inch unit.

It seems to be an easy to install package, IE with their F.A.S.T universal wiring harness, you can tap into the front speaker signals, hook up some power and you are in business.

Also, they offer a remote volume control that I could run up to the front of the car.

I don't listen to rap music, but want better sound - some cleaner bass than what the door/pillar speakers can deliver. I envision installing behind the right rear passenger seat under the hatch.

Anyone else have a Bazooka subwoofer in their 928? If so, tell me what you think about it and about your installation, time/complications.

VTY,
Joe

I got one in my 88 but cut it down to it fit behind the rear seat. For $100 pretty effective setup but you get what you pay for as the saying goes.

Hi Stefan,

Why did you have to cut it down? Was it too long? Where did you install it in the back? Does it matter how its oriented?

The 6" one is only 23" long, I can't imagine having to cut it down to fit.

A photo would be great, if you have one.

Thanks,
Joe

I have three of them in various cars, they work great. I like the CS8A5, 8" subwoofer tube with a built in 5 channel amp, 4x25 for your main speakers and 100 watts for the sub. You run a single wiring harness up to some point in the stock install between the head unit and speakers and the CS8A5 filters the bass from the main speaker signals to the sub amp and boosts the main signal. When you pull the bass out of the mains the speakers sound much better and play louder. Most find the stock speakers do just fine when they don't have the job of making bass.

Unfortunately I think only new old stock is available.

I had a 8" one in my GTS when I bought it. Overall I was not that impressed. In fact when I removed it to haul more stuff, I cold hardly tell the difference. Ended up installing a 10" when I did the rear seat delete, much much better.

I have one for each car, really good bang for the buck. It provides a richness to the sound with out being overly Basie. Make sure it is the amplified one and you should wire it to turn on with the key in the run position only. I mounted mine on the passenger side there is a screw to hold the strap mount to located near the rear 1/4. You will need to have a little cut in the rug to route the Tye down strap. Run a large 10 Gauge wire for ground and power cable to the CE panel. I took the speaker input from both rear speakers I had my rear 1/4's off at the time. You may have to tap into the speaker connector from the radio to make it easy for you.

I have the 6" (I thought it was a 6.5, but it was a few years back) one in my S4. I installed it all the way in the back, against the toolkit on the passenger side. Dramatic difference!

Because I'm paranoid, and tend to drive a little, errr, agressively, I made a few changes to the mounting step. First, I made up an install plate out of plywood, securely fastened it with some brackets and put it under the carpet so I had something solid to mount it to. . Next I built my own mount out of 1.5"x0.125 aluminum-the plastic mounts frightened me a little after I broke one during the initial install. I didn't want that thing sailing into the back of my head in an accident and figured if I strengthened one of them 100x beyond it's original design I'd be ok. I left the other one plastic. When I strap the tube down, I stuffed a block of seat-foam behind it against the tool-panel, too, so everything stays nice and snug. .

I'll take some shots of the install tomorrow. .I have to take it out anyway to replicate the aluminum mount, the other plastic one gave it up last time I took the tools out.

I installed an older model in my Ferrari. It's easy. Use large wires for the 12V and grd, and the orange wire is remote power on, can come from any switched circuit. I connected mine to the rear set of speakers so that I could control the boost by using the fader control. If you have pre-amp out on your head unit you should use those connectors as they will have less distortion. The amplified woofer will do plenty of amplification. I didn't have pre-out so I had to use the high power connections.

Maybe it wasn't connected correctly, or a fuse was blown?

Mine is maybe one baby step below pounding, louder than I ever care to play it.

Sounds crazy I know but the construction is such that you can 'carefully remove/whack' the cap end opposite the electrical. I just used a worm drive circular saw and make a few passes. Of course not easy and first pass wasn't true so I got better by the second and ended up with a 18" or so unit. I used ABS cemet to reglue the end caps and shortended the fiberglass insulation inside. No biggee...just bugged me that it was visible behind the rear seat. I ran all the cables to the corner of the rear carpet and used the supplied straps to secure it to the loop on the backside of the seat.

Now that I have Paul C's rear cargo cover and boxes, I'm scratching my head on how to (or if) to keep this setup. I'll get a picture tomorrow when there's more daylight.

Joe,
If you're not stuck on the Bazooka, recommend considering the Blaupunkt THb200A. I've had one for a year or so and am happy with the performance. It's flatter than a tube and fits pefectly mounted to the back of one of the rear seats. I have an Alpine amp on one seatback and the Blau on the other. They take up minimal luggage space and the install is very discreet, as they're mostly covered up by the luggage cover.

I looked at the flat subwoofer and wasn't impressed with the wattage or the price. I think Bazooka has the nicest product and the prices are still pretty reasonable. However, mounting the Bazooka products is a bit of a hassle.

I've got one in mine. Looks identical to the one you've pictured. Works great, and installed easily. It came with two straps. I looped one strap around the top of the driver's side rear seat, and then looped the other one around the Bazooka, laced through the strap around the seat. Holds it in place tightly and can be removed quickly if you need access to the battery or spare tire. I didn't drill any holes.

I have one in my car, picked it up used for $30 and very good bang for the buck. My stereo has subwoofer RCA outputs so it was a really easy hookup. I found it sounded best on the passenger side strapped against the side of the hatch with the woofer facing the back. Takes up very little room in the hatch and adds just enough bass.
