Hey Sean...Happy New Year...Sean you would know this, wasn't there a change in the spare tires for the 928's?..or was it just in rim width. Was it tire size as well? Maybe the spare is for the wrong 928 ..maybe that is the problem here. Two inches too big with air removed is a big difference don't you think?..just a thought....Bill

There was a change for the spares, but if you have the red painted alloy wheel it should be the correct one. The only way to tell is to fit it on the front wheel location. The older red alloy wheel will not clear the GTS brakes, but the outside diameter is the same.
Instead of a ratchet strap, I've used a piece of heavy rope and made a turniquet with a long wrench or board. Once it collapses completly it will stay that way until you squeeze it into the well. Every one I've ever seen has been tight!
Hmmm, KY jelly huh?

I would think the spare be appropriate to the diameter of the factory wheels a given model came with: 15" with 15s; 16" with 16s; 17" with 17s. A correlation could then be made to the size of the spare tire well based on MY/model.
Am I correct on this?

My long gone 89 GT came with 16" wheels and the correct spare. I later upgraded the front brakes to the GTS or 993TT big reds and 17" wheels. The old spare would not clear the new larger rotor and caliper. Had to replace the spare with one from a GTS. Both fit the original well in the rear hatch. Both were a tight fit every time I had to remove and re-install them. On two occasions I was forced to use the spare and both times I used the rope trick to compress the tire enough to get it back in the well. The wheels are different and I can only assume the tires are different, but the well is the same for all 87-95 MY's, and the outside diameters of both spare assemblies is the same.

I didn’t have a ratcheting thing, so I wrapped rope around it and then put a stick in the rope and turned it like tightening a tourniquet while I bled the air from the valve. After that, I greased it up with amroral and haven’t had a problem since—although it’s still a tight fit in the 84. The GTS’ doesn’t seem to be as tight(?)

That's a great, simple idea Wally, thanks.
