Glad it worked out....I was pretty sure it would ! you really never want to stand the trans upright on the diff cover because it might just "shift" !

Landseer,
Thanks for posting this.
Chris did the heaving lifting and I came over to help clean the grime off the trans before opening it up.
Man, that 1st gear selector fork and shaft is in there deep, but it's detent pin is the only one easily removed (esp. in situ).
Not a large diameter hole once the pin is removed, but one could get a pencil eraser head up in there.
Chris mentioned the fork moved off 1st gear with ease, so you never know.
Way to go on this one, man! I'll be over tomorrow to button up Chewy.

PS Will post pic and vid tomorrow or Monday.

Meanwhile, the platinum car looks like its headed to Bristol to be with my brother in law, who got the bug when at SITM.

We still have another 5 speed box we are working on here. We're gonna crack the code for fixing these things. Eventually.

I have a similar problem that I can't seem to diagnose. My 79 928 Euro is stuck in some gear. Cannot tell which.

I've opened the transmission and I can move all the shift forks. I couldn't tell if the first/reverse shift fork was misaligned, so I did the steps detailed in the video and I can move it now.

Trying to start the car in any gear moves the car forward, with the exception of reverse, which just locks everything up. Any ideas where I should start looking?

[edit]
Transmission was working. Friend removed transmission for other repairs. Now that it's back in, it won't shift properly. Linkages seem fine. Shift forks seem to move fine. There is rust inside the transmission, but I don't see any broken gears and everything seems to move when I crank the motor.

if it was worked on then there is a good chance that one or more of the selector detentes wasnt installed properly ,
or fell out during installation of the shift rods,
yes this is easy to do and you usually find one or more of the parts after everything is back together

As far as I know, the transmission wasn't opened.

Yes but did they store it standing upright on the rear diff cover....and if anyone tried shifting it while upright it slids into gear which is why when you engage reverse it stalls the engine as it is in two gears trying to spin both directions at the same time. It can also happen, althought very rare, if you get rearended in an accident.

One of the best! This pic was taken at 2am this morning. He's hand-fabbing an engine harness (14pin) from stratch. How cool is that?

I would believe this happened, except that it seems that I'm moving all the forks.

Am I missing something?
