Thumbs up another 928

Well..let's see.. I got my 1st 928 in Oct '07.. 1988 S4 AT 87k red w/black..got interested in going to track events..realized that my AT 928 was just too nice ...and slow... TRADED the S4 for a '91 911/964 Carrera 2, 5 speed.. somewhat sorted out for the track...got a line on a 1985 32v , 5 speed 928S, sitting for 6 years ...did not work out...test drove a local 1986.5 AT 928S..Garnet /Burgundy...CHEAP...not really into it...got home found a 1991 928 GT with 44k on eBay...bid ended ..called him up..offered more..drove to Pittsburgh..put it on my trailer..now in the process of repairs and restoration.Went from my 1st Porsche to my third in 3 months and now I have a track toy and a 928 project that will be unveiled for SITM 2010...!!Tempted..?? I think I am addicted....!!!....

Ah , is there any market for Jaguars other than E types early XK 120-150s ??? And Chuck even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while....I think you will agree that probably 99% of ALL 928 buys and sells end up on the negative. No offense intended since you bought well and held out for the "right" buyers just do not confuse possible with probable. Plus EVERY buy includes risks of undisclosed problems , potential that the T-belt , thrust bearing , clutch or At trans , LH will let go while you own it. Much like playing Blackjack where if you play really well you should only drop 2-3 % of your total wagers but in a short sampling (statistically flawed ) you can walk away as a winner. Buy enough 928s and there will be an "Oh **** " sooner or later , hopefully after you have made some good money. At times we may also see the "Greater Fool Theory " at work....where it makes no difference what YOU pay as long as you find someone else to pay MORE ! Trick is getting out before the music stops. Buy them , drive them , enjoy them that is what they were made for....smiles per mile ....priceless !

Jim, why so negative?

I have a completely different view point than you do on this one. If I had only done this once or twice I MIGHT agree with you on SOME of your points........ Fact is, I've done it on all but the very first 928 I ever bought back in 1992. That would be 7 times (I sold one GTS twice...)

Perhaps it's; an educated 928 enthusiast who buys the "right" cars and maintains them??????? The guy I sold my 95 GTS to, was after me for a year b/f I agreed to sell it to him....... The guy who bought Kermit contacted me last summer and we just closed the deal last month......

Chuck Your attention to detail and willingness to make sure that your cars are as nice as possible is also NOT typical. You are in many ways the IDEAL prior owner and that shows in the presentation. Again no offense intended just rest assured that yours is NOT the experience of most. You can afford to buy nice cars , improve them and wait for the individual who appreciates what you have . The vast bulk of 928s being offered for sale are abused , neglected ,"project" cars , with lots of repairs needed because it costs too much.....thus the "firesale"

Jim, why so negative?
At the risk of putting words in Jim's mouth, I think he's personally witnessed more money being poured down more 928 ratholes than anyone else. Doing it 9-5 (8-5? )for 15 years might do that to you.

FWIW, for a long time I worried a lot about all the money I was spending on the GT, how underwater I was, etc. Since I blew up the GTS engine I have just decided that it's a lot more fun to keep the worst case scenario in mind- what would happen if I two meteorites fell out pf the sky, severing the fuel lines and burning the cars to the ground. I am fortunate that the cars are not daily drivers, so both could get blown to smithereens and it wouldn't make a bit of difference in my daily life (not that it wouldn't suck, but you get the idea...) Sure, I'd like to have someone offer me 2x what I paid for them, but that's not at all a factor in the overall enjoyment (driving, wrenching, GTG's, the community here) that I get from 928dom.

After all the family fiscal responsibilities are met, the toy money gets spent on the toys. My line of work hammers home daily the adage about living the life you get, so I'm heeding the advice.

10-4! Understood.

The only comment I'd make to this is that there are buyers out there looking for really nice low mileage 928s as evidenced by the recent high $ sales made by Willhoit as well as the recent sale of Kermit. Ultimately, I had two guys waiting if my German buyer fell through. Having said that, I agree there are few cars in that league.
