Default Replace heater core

MY 89 - quick question. Is the replacement of a heater core a major operation? Does the dash need to be pulled - not much about this in the archives. Appreciate any help.

Yes, and yes. Everything between the seats and the heater core must be removed.

Can you pressure test the heater core to see if it has a leak?

The heater core sits between the evaporator core and the aft end of the air box.

To gain axcess it requires the whole internal ventilation air box to be removed and split to gain access to the heater core.

Before removal have you definately ascertained that the heater core is leaking or is it one of the connection to the inlet and outlet pipes?

If you are not sure then pressure test the unit in situ, but do not exceed the operation pressure as indicator on the cooling water reservoir cap.

Usually when you have a leak in you heater core you end up having a mist being generated in the cabin when the system is operational.

This car had spent all its time in Florida and it appeared the PO had pulled the intake and return heater hoses off the heater core and spliced them together bi-passing the core. When this was done the intake and out pipes on the core were distroyed and the core/pipes needs to be replaced.

928 international has a half price sale on used parts a used heater core would probably be OK as they rarely go bad

I would certainly make a good attempt to repair the existing pipes before I disassembled the car. They hang the heater core from the roof of the factory by a string, then slowly build the entire car around it...

If I DID have to replace the heater core, I would get a used one from Jeannie, along with new vacuum actuators, and do a major refurb inside the dash and console.

Good advise Wally, not looking forward to correcting this issue. Other than this, there is not one problem with this car - runs and looks like new. I don't drive it in the winter anyway - maybe it's not a major problem.
