On my 81 the stop light warning on the dash stays lit until I press the brake pedal. Could it be something to do with that?

No, that's part of the POST test. All 928s do that.

Grounds are next. But I think you have a crappy bulb control module.

I just unpluged one mc sensor at a time to see what one worked and what one did not BUT if your going to replace one replace both they are cheap and if one has failed the other is prolly not far behind they can be bought new at most parts stores they are the same as early 80's VW rabbits

When my 'stop lamp' stayed on after replacing numerous bulbs, cleaning contacts and such, I traced the problem to a defective headlamp on/off switch. Replaced with new unit purchased from dealership and no problems since!

YES! try moving/wiggle side to side and see if stop lamp goes out . The contacts wear out, I first replaced with used one which helped then same issue. You may want to fisrt try replacing with known good unit.

No - stop lamps means stop lamps (brake lights in other words). There is a seperate warning for the rear marker lights.

No other bulbs are monitored by the system.

If you don't know the answers - guessing doesn't help anyone...
