Default 2 problems

First does any one know why my windsheild wipers would be making a clunking sound on the way up but not on the way down, it feels like a thumping inside the car like a jumping gear on a tooth gear. I have never worked on the wipers or know how they operate and can not find it in my repair manual disk.
Please help if you can.

The other thing is when I have my A/c on off slide position and the fan off and the A/c button off the air still seems to blow in thru the vents and I have to close the vents themselfs to stop the air flow towards my face but it still comes out on top where the defroster would normally come from. The air fells like outside temp and then warms up as the engines does, almost like there is a flap open to the engine compartment but I don't see anything open.

Thanks
Tony H.

Have you checked all the vacuum lines to the heater system? I had a disconnect of the vac line by the brake booster which caused the slide to not actually control any of the flaps in the system, so nomatter the slide position the vent was always open and no heat at the floor. also the heater (water) valve tends to fail with age. when this occurs the temp slide no longet shuts off flow even on the cold position. the valve is relatively inexpensive and fairly easy to change. it is located under the airbox at the back end of the engine. while you are changine the valve there is the "short" hose that connects it to the engine that should probably be changed as it is old too.

I am new to working on this car for the most part what is the air box, do you mean the air cleaner long black thing near the windsheild? I see that and it has the filter in it, is it under that?
I will try to find the brake booster to see if any hoses look off if I can find the brake booster?

What about the wiper issue any ideas , I just tried to put them on again and it is not raining and the thumping did not accure when the windsheild is dry only when it was wet yesterday and this mornig when I had dew on the windsheild? Dry it does not make any thumping at all. I was wondering how that system works, does one arm push the other arm via a bar like most cars or are they run by seperate motors each, and where would I check to see if a bushing may be worn out or something?

Thanks Tony H.

Check the plastic tray between the firewall and the cowl - the one that cover the wiper linkage. There are some clips that are suppose to hold that plastic tray up. I've seen many tray torn up from the wipers. Also what you take it off, you'll see how the linkage works. It's circular motion, so it's probably only hitting in one spot. Good luck.

For the wiper problem, I had a problem that sounds pretty close to yours several years ago. It was just the driver wiper which knocked on the left mount of the windshield. I just put off the wiper arm from the wiper axle shaft, turn it one tooth toward passenger side and re mounted it.

Thanks for all of the tips on how to check things i did find a small black vaccume line off near the brake booster I pluged into a hose that had a T on it an one side was just ope on the T so I guessed that the vaccume may go there i will see later when i travel it that j helped or solved my problem there.

The other thing is that the wiper thumps in the middle of the winsheild on the way up not near the very top or left edge of the windshield, almost like dead in front of your veiwing area.

I did see the way it works with a arm that turms and a bushing that moves the other arm and a black hard plastic type bushing that seems to be solid no play in it anyway. I am going to turn it on and watch to see if the top of the turning part may be hitting something as it turns, but it just seemed strange that it only happened with the windshield wet not when it is dry.

Many folks ignore the nead for lubrication of the wiper arm linkage bits under that plastic tray. Between the stiction on the glass and a sticky linkage, you can easily get windup and resultant chatter of the wipers. Simple to avoid with some lithium grease on the connections. Do the hood hinges and the front lower latch at the same time.

Thanks for the help from everyone the one who told me about the vaccume well it worked.

I have to get some lithium grease and try that I don't have any on hand but the wiper does knock on the way up but not on the way down, I wish I had some grease on hand it is raining pretty hard at the moment and I am going to have to use them on the way home.

Thanks again for all of the help.

I will update if the grease helps or not.

Tony--

I use the CRC-branded stuff, but alomst any spray lith lube will do the trick. Stuff they sell at Wal-Mart in the auto care section is plenty good for these duties.
