My 82 928 starts without a fuel pump relay
Hi All,
Sorry. 83 928S. I have not seen a trouble post for this. I am having starting problems on my 83 928 auto. It will not start with the fuel pump relay in place or even jumpered. But when I remove the relay it starts up fine and idles great. After it warms up for 5 minutes and I shut it off. It will not start again until it cools. I guess I dont need that lousey fuel pump relay. LOL. I checked almost everything. Yes, my 928 is possessed. My guess is some type of electrical short in the fuel system. Wire short to ground. Injector etc. Its gotta get fixed. Anybody want to take a stab at this crazy problem?

My guess is that at some point in the past your car was wired when the FP relay caused trouble. The supply to the FP was wired into the 15 bus which is hot when the key is on. When you jumper the FP relay connections, you prolly short the power stub to the FP to ground(don't do this too much, it could burn).

Check the fuel pump relay socket for power.
Turn the ignition switch on and check for 12 vdc on Terminal 87 in the relay socket. If there is power, there is an added power connection on the fuel pump circuit.
