Sorry to hear of the trouble, but glad you caught it quickly.

I had that happen on my 87 928, but I think the battery access door was out of alignment. I didn't have the post cover on but did have the battery hold down in place, so a bit of a mystery.

I say ensure correct size battery, post cover, hold down in place and test for clearance between the posts and the battery cover.

Glad you're OK.

Can anyone tell me from the PET on a 1989 where the wire harness arcoss the bach hatch area splices? Or better yet a drawing showing that harness. It the one that connects to the hatch release, tail lights, side markers. I fear mine is toasty and I can't get the PET manual to load on my computor right now.

Anyone have a good used one??? If not I may be splicing in.

Found a Duralast 48 DL at AutoZone for about $93.00 and a NEG cable that is $6.99 and the stock flat cable from the big three is $$$$ ( around $70.00 ) . Does it really matter that its not flat?

Dean, I have everything you need (even the correct battery, I think) but I sold the negative battery wire. I may have a ground wire off the 84 though.

Is the 88 and 89 harness the same?

+1. Safety Glasses for battery work!!!

I'd be interested in the details of the incident.

I know a fellow who has "adequate" sight left in his right eye and is _very_ happy to have any sight at all.

The round neg cable works fine.

Dean- My 86 has a round ground cable when I purchased it. I did notice a bit more interferance with the battery box door, as the slight bulge was only meant to accomadate a flat cable. If you trim it should be fine, or you could wrap the shoulder of the door(like mine is done) and deal with the fact the door won't close all the way.

I checked mine today. The '88 5 speed has sizzle marks on the battery hatch and the plastic terminal cover has fallen off the battery. The '91 auto has the terminal cover but there are marks where the battery has bounced up and hit the hatch. Neither car has a battery hold down. Can anyone post a photo of the proper hold down? thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Well I went to AutoZone and picked up a Duralast 48 dl battery and the ground strap. Interesting that this battery actually snaps down in the bottom of the battery box and is held in place very tightly. Car started right up. All lights worked as they should and the rear hatch release was still working as well. The only thing I see is my alt gage is reading ZERO. I let the car run several minutes with all lights on and was checking the battery constantly to see if there was a drain. I detected none so I'm hoping its a instrumentation issue and not a fried alt...I will test more tomorrow.

Anyone have a nice cashmere tool panel to sell???? Mine is fried and melted. Looks like I really got off easy.

Can someone post a photo or drawing of the battery tie down? I missing this as well. I didn't even know it was gone.

Lots of calls this morning on this issue.
The rubber pad that DR mentioned is 928 504 107 02 and about $10.
I am sure a piece of rubber sheet would do just as well.

If you have the right sized battery the hold down strap should work just fine.

Dean-

Check the actual charging voltage with a meter. The dead short condition is a serious threat to alternator health.

There is no "alternator gauge" - you just have a voltmeter - if its at zero then it is defective if the car will start & run OK. It should be measuring battery voltage when the key is on even if the alternator is dead...

Since the car was running when this happened the alternator was certainly being stressed as well... it likely was damaged - but the voltage gauge issue is seperate to that - test the alternator for sure (check voltage with a DMM) but even replacing the alt won't fix the voltemeter issue.

I hope this reinforces to everyone that the battery hold down is truly not an optional piece of gear... it seems many think of it this way and it ends up getting left out...
