Default setting shift points in automatic?? 84 US

What exactly determines the shift points in older 4 speed automatics. Our lemons "estate" in an 84 and seems to chose random RPM's to shift at WOT...sometimes its 6000, sometimes its 6500 (scary).....is it controlled only by vacuum or is there a bowden cable I can loosen to bring the shift RPM's down? The kickdown switch appears to be "dead" and we wired a bypass, which also seems to do exactly nothing...

Brian - if it helps, everyting I could find about the '80 (3sp) indicated vacuum is the only controller for WOT. Since the power drops off on the top, I typically lift off the WOT switch at ~5700 so it will shift earlier, and then mash the switch immediately once shifted. Noticeably faster than letting it hang with the addt'l rpms and no power up there.

Since you're with a manual switch only, you should be able to do the same thing by simply flipping the switch to off momentarily and then right back on. That should let you stay in the fat part of the curve below 6k.

Good luck!
