Default Rev counter - where it gets feed from?

Hi all,

probably a stoopid question but I haven't found the answer for it anywhere, forums or workshop manuals, etc.

Oh ya - mines a 80 model, manual rhd UK 928. Making progress on it bit by bit, and hoping to get it driving soon. Starts first tip every time now so getting closer...

My rev counter isn't working, hasn't been since I got the car and I'm looking to get that working while I have the cluster open in case there is something I need to do in there.

My question is where does the rev counter ultimately get the feed from to show what revs the engine is doing? It has been suggested to me it could be the alternator but I haven't been able to confirm.

Anyone know?

tia,
Kev.

Tachomoeter or odometer? Making sure we are not losing something in translation

Green wire off the distributor goes to the ignition module in the right fender.
From there the signal is sent to the fuse box / relay panel and is split off to the fuel pump relay, L-Jet computer (wait, yours is CIS, skip that) and the tach.

So.....if the car runs the signal is making as far as the fuse panel to turn on the fuel pump.

Yeah, my money is on the fact that you'll find a loose connection in the pod. Not too hard to remove and clean everything in there.

Thanks guys - yes the tachometer, the gauge with the engine revs on it.

Sounds like the issue is between the fuse/relays and the instrument cluster then 'cos it's starting first tip every time at the moment (knock on wood). That said though after a while the revs slowly die off and the engine cuts out. Engine just sitting idle until then.

I'll track down where it splits at the fuse/relays and see what I can find I think.

thanks!
Kev.
