Keep it until you can fix it.
Just looking at how long you have been a member here and how many posts you have tells me you are serious about owning a 928.
It looks like you were here a long time before you got your dream car, do not let go of your dream.
That is way to nice a car to part out.

And, back to what Sean said, this chunk might just be stuck in one of the intake valves keeping it open.

Dan I know you are really bummed, and you have other responsibilities, that said .
I think the car you have is way to nice to part, it is a rare color combo and it has in my opinion just the right amount of Burgundy, to make is a cool car.
In the long run parting it out will be a mistake, as you will wind up taking some of the cash and buying another car and that you will dump 3 times what you have into this one to make it nice.
I would search for a good running engine, and do a WP/TB and seal job on it, then pull the original engine and part that out, that should help pay for the new engine or be close you might be in the 500.00 area all said and done.
Cams 400.00
Heads 500.00 set
Ex manifolds 125.00 set
Oil pan 75.00
so you get the idea??????
Good luck on your decision

Thanks Mrmerlin I appreciate it. Took me a good year to finally get all this work done. Thanks for all the posts its been comforting. Tomorrow after work I will tear into it. I will post pictures as pieces come off.
For giggles let say the small chunk is holding one of the valves open wouldn't one of the cams or valves be damaged because of this?

I don't see how that part could break.
You need to find some one with a borescope and a leak down tester and check that cylinder out.

I agree with Merlin, you can buy a whole engine too, just few months ago there was a S4 engine for sale with refreshed intake and valve covers for only 1700 $.
It had 170 000 miles on it.
there is also another place I called that had 2 S4 engines for around 1600-1700, 180 $ for shipping, one was in a small engine fire. The reason I didnt buy was because I wanted the short block and wanted to see the bores.

I'm reminded of UKKid. He rebuilt his heads while the car was outside. In an condo/apartment building parking lot. In winter. At night after work and on the weekends. In cold, rainy, bitter, speed camera-infested Britain. Clarkson and Hamster would drive by and heckle him. Hell, I think it was also during WWII and he had to duck bombs from HE-111s.
Every time I find something that's too hard, or too difficult, or too whatever, I remember UKKid's story. And if it ain't that bad I gird my loins (Or IOW, for you youngsters: Man-Up) and get it done.

The valve could be bent and/or the seat be scared but you just don't know.
If lets just say looking at the positive side you got the intake off you might be able to see the chunk stuck at the valve and remove it???
Not that I am recommending you drive around with a bent valve, but mine ran and idled fairly well with 2 bent valves. I actually drove it 4 or 500 miles. However in the process of bending a valve mine also damaged a lifter (s). It had a very loud tapping noise after the TB incident.

This is never the way to look at a 928. With few extraordinary exceptions, you will always have way more money into it than you can ever get for it. If money is a problem with bringing it back to life, then cut your losses and run. Get what you can (and again, parting it out won't be the most cost effective means for you) and be done with it, and save for another one on another day.

I have an 88 75k mile motor sitting in my garage I bought for the 87 5 speed I just sold.
It sounds like you could have a very bent valve, did the timing belt break?
