Default New car, have a few questions...

Hi guys, we just picked up a new track car project and I'm very excited! I've been doing track days and time trials in Old BMW's for the last 5 years and this will be my first venture into the Porsche world.

The car is a '78 928 5-speed that a local race shop needed to get rid of as it was just taking up space and they had moved on to other projects. Here's the text from the ad:

This is a good running and driving 78 porsche 928 time trial car.

It is the V8 engine with a 5 speed transmission.
New Hawk Blue Brake pads front and rear
Coilover suspension
5 point race haress and seatbelt bar
Fiberglass race seat
Afco Aluminum radiator
Quick Release steering wheel
Custom mandrel bent 3" exhaust-no muffler- Sounds Beautiful!!!
Lexan side and rear windows
Significant weight loss- interior gutted, Insulation removed, headlights removed, etc... Weighs 2700 pounds
Hankook race tires -(old and cracked)

This car was built with great intetions, but we have moved on to
other door to door road race cars and we need the space!

This is a race car and can not be returned to street legal!

Come drive it around our parking lot!
$1000 or best offer!
Don't be jealous! it is really pretty ugly, has a terrible silver paint job, and the interior is covered in the nasty sound deadening glue.

I've done alot of searching and have shop manuals on the way. I do have a few questions though.

When the shop installed the AFCO AL radiator, they just bypassed the oil cooler as a temporary solution. I want to install a nice oil cooler up front (nascar surplus probably) Do we need a thermostat for the oil cooler? What oil temps should I shoot for on track?

The other question I had was regarding Wheels and tires. The car currently has Phone dials with 225/50/16 slicks front and back. They look really skinny!

I was hoping to run GT3 Cup rear tires all around. What wheels should I look for? 18x10? 18x11?

Thanks alot in advance!

Returning it to street duty would not be fun. Getting the glue out of the interior won't be much fun either. I heard of someone using something REALLY, REALLY COLD and spraying that on it and it gets hard and then they hit it with a hammer. Not sure how it worked, just remembering some talk about it.

Those belts may have expired, so be sure to check the build date. Since you don't know the history don't trust them...

You can get wheels of that size all the way around on a 928, but you will have to buy custom wheels in a custom offset to do it... My racer has GIANT fender flares so I can use the same wheels front and rear and rotate them. Not sure you can get that w/o flares... Some of the other racers will jump in here soon enough!

Congrats on your purchase! Hope it brings you many days of track action fun!

Those are huge tires for a 180 rwhp motor.

What sort of events and class are you planning on racing in?

Dry ice, liquid carbon dioxide, (don't let the global warming catastropists, know you are using it.- World is going to turn into a burning ember at 1.35pm monday 1st of april 2012-it's all going to be your fault!)

The 928 has the oil thermostat in the block and your car may have one. You say "bypassed." Are the hoses there and capped or looped together? All the blocks have the passages but some early cars didn't have the hoses and other parts installed to make it work.

If you've got the hoses then just connect it up to your oil cooler.

There must be 500 threads here on wheels and tires. Look for Andrews wheel fitment calculator spreadsheet. The fronts are tricky and will take 8.5" or 9" with a high offset, like 60mm. The rears can go 10" easily. Really depends on the tires, after all.

If you're willing to roll and pull the fenders and put extra locks on the steering rack then you can make 10" wheels work in front.

Thanks, we've got the tires figured out. We're going to run 18x10 turbo twists all around. The fronts will be very tight, but it's a race car and I have a fender roller, so we can make it work.

The oil cooler lines are just looped together, so hooking up the cooler shouldn't be tough. Good to know that there's a thermostat in the block.

We will be running time trial events locally next season (miller motorsports park) and then will make the transition to Wheel to wheel racing in the local series (classed by displacement)

As for the 180whp comment, we'll run it for at least one season as is, and then swap in a 5.0 or a *GASP* chevy 350
