My brother in law, who served with me in Vietnam in the Marines has a 914-6. I say that it was sold as a VW in every other country except the U.S. America is the only country it was badged as a Porsche. Am I right or wrong. BTW, he thinks our "Sharks" aren't real Porsche's, for all the same reasons all the airheads think so. I say he's full of it. We both would like to hear from the experts on RL. Thanks, Joe & Bob

I just knew it as the "VW-Porsche" back in Germany. I have no idea where people went to buy it, though. I remember the local VW dealer also offered Porsche up to a certain point - probably when Porsche started building a smaller, tighter integrated dealer network.

Tell your brother-in-law to look at ANY sales literature from Porsche during the time the 928 was being produced. It will refer to the 928 as the "Flagship of the Porsche line"! Does not get much more "PORSCHE" than the top dog in the line up I don't think! It was really the first FULLY IN HOUSE design from Porsche too... The 911's always had to owe at least some of their existence to the VW bug... The 928 was a CLEAN SHEET OF PAPER design from PORSCHE.

Just read a little bit from the book "Project 928" to him if he needs more convincing. And ANYONE who owns a 914 has NO BUSINESS talking about a "REAL PORSCHE!" LOL!

Thanks guys, I know a 914 is a square bug. My bro Bob just won't listen to the facts. Because he was my brother Marine before he became my bro in law, I cut him a lot of slack. And he's always bugging me to let him drive my 928. What he's really fuming about is that we "SHARK" owners are getting our own "limited edition "928" wrist watch. I just can't wait to flash it on him at the family Christmas dinner.
I've now got him convinced that Gates is coming out with a limited edition Fan Belt for all the air coolers.

LOL! That is GREAT! You might show him our personal 928 Calendar too! Man, with all the hot girls in that it would KILL HIM! Heck, maybe get him one for Christmas! You could also show him the 928 DVD, maybe that would convince him when he saw 928's on track TEARING up the 911's and everything else!

Ok I'm a long-time 914 guy and here's the scoop. It was conceived as an affordable sports car for BOTH Porsche and VW who would sell different models and share costs. VW would sell the 4-cyl models while the six was a full-on Porsche. Well by the time production loomed, VW got cold feet but was too far in to not be a part for at least a little while. So the early 4-cyl cars were known as VW-Porsches in markets outside the US, while the 2.0l six was always a Porsche everywhere. My track car actually had one of the fairly rare VW-Porsche emblems on it which you can almost sorta not-see in this pic.

However in the US they were all sold as Porsches from the start. Although the 4-cyl cars used the VW Type-IV engine in 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 displacements, everything else was pretty much the same as the sixers. BTW with the very carefully-built 2.0l four and exhaust setup I had in my car, I got asked more than once what size six-cylinder I had. Fabulous cars, really thinking about getting another one. (yeah I enjoy Porsche's bastard step-children)

BTW if his 914-6 is a real one, it's worth quite a bit more than most 928s.

James, he's seen both I bought the DVD from you when they first were available, and picked up the callendar from Nicole at Anaheim last Saturday. And Bob's 914-6 is a real one. He won the concours with it in his class about 7 or 8 yrs ago. It's a garage queen, it sits all the time. It's a very beautiful car, with only 16,000 origional miles. He also has a 944 prototype racecar that I believe is the only one in this country. I know that he has been trying to run it for the past ten years at the vintage races, but money problems seem to get him every year. Anyhow we like to go at each other from time to time. When I mention my Pantera, he always get very quiet, and sulks. But thats another story. Thanks, Joe
