Default 1979 5spd What are your thoughts?

I am a computer dummy, almost 50, so I do not know how to post a link. That being said I am looking at a 79 5spd. Craigslist Fa, Tampa Bay(Pinnellas 5k 928 racecar)
No real records.
I looks like I can pick it up for 2k.
Paint is shot, the rear lid has rust but he has another in good shape.
Some rust on Quarter's by window.
Interior for a Fl car is in great shape!
Tranny syncros are going but the car shifts and the motor runs well.
Headlights and most of the electricals work.
Driver side window does not work but I can hear the motor, easy fix?
Nice wheels and tires, turbo twist I think.
Exhaust sounds like it has a leak?

My plan on this car is to hold on to it for a long time or until I pass and give it to my daughers! So I understand that I will be spending thousands of dollars over the years to come until it is just what I want.

I am picking a 79 do to its weight and compression. I will boost this car w/ a turbo or a s/c and replace the tranny w/ a 85.
This site is awesome and I am greatful for the wealth of info that is shared here!

that's half the battle right there...

sounds like a good starting point, i bought my first 79 with no records, a cracked head, and needing cosmetics, etc., and i've never regretted it, and i understood it would take $ to get it where i wanted it - that part may never end ... -

the driver's window is probably the plastic roller/button on the end of the regulator arm, not a bad thing to fix, but you have to R/R the regulator to do it -

this one?

http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/cto/1419888475.html

it's rough looking but for 2k if its a solid running car that isn't too bad especially if the interior is nice - It sounds like you've driven the car and are probably better able to judge its condition than us via the internet.
that said, what's the mileage? How does the engine rubber look? Are the option codes under the rug in the trunk and / or in the doorjamb? Do you really want to deal with the rust repair?
Also, the car looks like it was lowered. You should figure out how that was done, and if it was done correctly.
I am sure others will also have things to point out...

'79's are cool. Although if you go with some crazy turbo setup you might end up replacing the mechanical FI on the car - there are supercharger setups all ready to go for a '79 but the fuel / ignition system isn't super tuneable. That said, I do not know how re-programmable the later EFI systems are either, although I am sure there is a bit more tuneability in a later model car.

I will have to check for the option codes that you are talking about.

I am not sure if the car has been lowered, I do know that the tires need air.
Rubber looks ok but I would be replacing that eventually.
How tough is it to repair rust? It is on the surface and lloks like it just started if that matters.
The seats look perfect for the year but there is a tear on the top of the rear seats. The dash has no tears and isn't warped.
I have done a lot of reading on the CIS and it's abilities. I eventually look at a stand alone setup like Megasquirt. I believe I also read somewhere that 928 Motorsports was coming out with a engine mgt product. I want a forged setup with about 15psi of boost!

Thanks for your reply's.

Spending $5k more now for a nicer car will save you $15k over the next 5 to 10 years of ownership, and you would start and finish with a much nicer car.

Is it this one you are looking at?

No that's not it, it was the first link that was posted. That is another local 928 f/s but it is a auto which won't do.

I only have so much money now to buy and I really want to get started. I have a trust that pay's monthly so I will take so much a month and put it toward the car, so it will be a long process. I am just tired of looking and really want to get started.

The good news is my best friend is a Porsche mechanis!

When that car is in nice shape, it will be a $3k 79, and will have cost the price of a nice S4.

Didn't we talk some time ago, maybe on Roadfly? How much have you saved up since then?

Since your friend is a Porsche mechanic I'd drop 2k for it. Worst case scenario you can turn around and sell it probably for that, if you choose not to move forward. The five speed IMO is a plus!

There are better cars for less, although they may not be local to you.
Here are a few example, no affiliation, just saw them on CL:

tlsmith

The two links you posted I have looked into.
The one in memphis has major electrical problems and needs a tranny, the one in Miami needs a clutch(needs to be towed) and a tranny. Also you can't tell from the pics but the searts and dash need to be redone.

Thanks again!

Stephen

Danglerb I am not sure if we spoke on roadfly....I have 3k right now and a budget of about 8 to 10k a year.

Try www.craigspal.com their free program will let you search the whole country at one time. Those were just two quick ones out of hundreds in the 3-5K range.

I understand that I will be upside down the minute I drive the car. That is OK. I will never get what I put in it but since I won't be selling it then it does not matter, even though it might be stupid and I should have my head checked.

The 928 has always been the perfect car for me, V8, hatchback awesome sound and handleing etc.

That being said I am just looking at the price and if it is OK for what I am getting. The before and after, the money spent is irrelivant if you know what I mean as I believe that I am not the only 928 owner that will get in way over his head.
I decided I want a OB, not an S4 or any other 928, a 79. I know I need my head checked but I eventually want to see what I can get out of the 4.5 block.
Even still
3k paint
3k to get her running right
1.5k tranny
2k interior work
2k exhaust
6k s/c
2k engine mgt
plus 10k for what I do not see

I could spend less than 30k and have a beast of a dream car or I could shell out a little more and buy a new Mustang GT that couldn't keep up with it if it tried! I can probably spend less and get what I want from her!

Please don't take what I say as trying to tell you what you should do. I think each of us is entitled to do as we please in our pursuit of the 928 dream. If you feel strongly about trying a path others might not, you only live once.

All I can say is that until you own a 928 you will not appreciate the true size of the gap between a NICE car and what you are considering. After you attend a few of the regional meetings and see what nice cars are like up close, it will start to become clear, and that may be a painful lesson.

The worst part is that for the first few years of ownership you will be spending all of the money you can spare, and driving a troublesome project car with a long list of items needing work. Many find that experience discouraging.

Maybe your friend the Porsche mechanic can find a nicer car for you?

early 928's at the correct ride height look like jacked-up SUV's by today's standards. Here is what my car looks like (it is 100% stock and a very low mileage car):

You can almost get your fist between the tire (a 225/50-16) and the fender...
