Default spark plug change

Hey, I read thru some old threads about spark plug changing and this may be a stupid question but here goes.

I am waiting on parts from Roger to do PKns'r and belt so I decided to maybe change my plugs while I was at this job, so I looked at the cd manual and I did not see what I wanted to find can someone tell me if I have to remove the valve covers to change these things? I don't see how to get at the plugs unless I do take them off.

It looks like I do but I just wanted to ask before I go and do more than I need to. I guess they are valve covers they look like them they say 32 valve on top and are connected by multiple hose clamps, and I am not sure if I take the clamps off am I going to need a new gasket for the bottom of them or do the just lift off?

I am new to working on my car 1986 928 so every little details seems new to me so I try to find out from great people like you guy and gals out there, before I go and jump into the fire.

If it seems like a stupid question I am sorry but I am going to learn how to take this cat apart piece by piece if I have to, to maintain it?

Presently I'm trying to do the timing belt and Pksn'r and water pump maybe? Many people have been great during this trip of mine and I want to thank them all but now my stupid self needs help with what is propbably obvious to most but it's just a question I want to ask before I start the plug change, I have to take them out to rotate the engine during belt replacement so I might as well chage them anyway.?

1. Copper plugs
2. No need to remove anything except the intake tubes going to the air box and the spark plug cable doing to the plug.

A swivel spark plug socket is nice but not necessary with a couple of different extensions.

Different trains of thought for anti-seize on the threads. I use copper base by Wurth on my cars. Just a small dab to keep them from galling in the threads.

The toolkit in the back should have a spark plug removal tool (it looks like a combination socket + extension with a spring wrapped around it). It's long enough to reach into the valve cover cavity.

It's a bit intimidating the first time you do it, but it really is a snap.

The first time I tried to do this I used a regular spark plug socket plus extension, but when I tried to pull it out, the socket slipped off the extension and I had a hard time getting it out. Stick to the OEM tool, it works great.

This was one of the quickest, whistle-while-you-work jobs ever in my queue. If you don't have the spark plug removal/insertion tool; remember that all you need is a spark plug socket with an internal rubber grommet for grabbing onto and extracting the old spark plug. You also need a nice piece of straight vacuum hose for sticking onto the tip of the new spark plug, so that you can lower the plug into the hole and start turning the plug by hand via the hose. Never start turning a plug via wrench, until you're certain the plug isn't cross threading into the head.

Ok Thanks so I need to just remove the four rubber sleves and the air box comes off after i take those loose is the cover that say 32 valve an air box or are you talking about the air box where the filter is in the rear of the car engine which I already took out?

Trust after starting the timing belt and removeing all of that stuff to even see the belt daunting isn't in my mind any more? But someone said just remove the air intake tubes that is all, but my plug wires are under that cover that says 32 valve on it, I can't hardly see the plug wire top much less get a wrench in there. The thing that say 32 valve on it is that a valve cover or intake tube?

If I had the tools in the rear of the car ie: tool kit. I could try that but my car did not have those when I bought it.

Hey out there, am I wrong to think the 32 valve silver things that cover my spark plugs should be removed to do the plugs or should not be reomoved to do the plugs? Or are those thing actual valve covers that have gaskets on them? 1986 928 not he older style engine with spider looking intake m ine is the flat accross style?

the 32 valve items you are refering to are part of the intake plenum. they remove quire easily and have no gaskets under them. the are only attached to the intake runners via the short sections of tube and the hose clamps (5 per side). just loosen the clamps and pull the box toward the fender to remove. also there are two small ridgid tubes one per side held to the back of the box by a small bolt (8mm head) that will need to be removed before removing the boxes.

Thanks for tha info.
I took off the passenger side first and it came off very easy, but I noticed inside there was some oil built up not alot but some is that normal to have oil in them?

Yes some oil in the intake seem to be common due to the design of the original crank case ventilation / oil separation system. At least common enough that there have been several systems designed to help eliminate it.

One product designed for this is the Sharkvent. see the following thread.

Remember to use some anti-seize on the plug threads.

A good WYAIT if you're getting this deep is to remove and clean the Idle Stabilizer Valve.

On the earlier 4.5L/16v 928s can anyone help with instructions on how to remove the two spark plugs closest to the windshield? What kind of extension is required? Please include picture as i can't reach the spark plugs with the extensions i have but dont want to remove the spider leg/air takes if i dont have to.

take off the air cleaner assembly then you can easily reach the rear plugs
