Kickdown Question
84’ 16V 4Speed Auto US Spec
A while back I discovered that the kickdown was not engaging, though it was a simple fix with the peddle adjustment. That said, I have read many posts on the KD Bypass and decided to do this job today.
Prior to leaving for Radioshack, I put in a temporary jumper for the 3 mile drive there… The results were not as expected:
- Even with very mild acceleration, the car would not shift above 2nd gear.
- The car would not shift up even when taking my foot off the accelerator.
Even with the jumper off, no bypass, peddle to the floor, it will up-shift at about half way to redline rather than +5K RPM as many online report.
From what I have read, this may be an adjustment issue with the AT linkage or the vacuum? Thoughts anyone? Thanks.

Coincidently, I'm screwing around with my 84's shifting today too. My problem is, it wants to downshift when I"m just driving along. Although I'm not sure if the problem you're describing is related to upshifting or downshifting, some of the things in the WSM to check (depending on the problem) are:
"No upshift"
- Check govenor pressure. If there is no governor pressure reading, continue with...
- Clean and service centrifugal governor
- Disassemble and clean shift valve housing, replacing if necessary
"Upshifts only in upper speed range of gears"
- Check and adjust control pressure cable
- Check govenor pressure. If there is no governor pressure reading, continue with...
- Service control pressure valve
"Upshifts only in lower speed range of gears"
- Check whether control pressure cable is disconected or torn and then adjust accurately
- Check full throttle stop. Move accelerator pedal from full throttle and check whether throttle is against full throttle stop
- Check govenor pressure.
"No kickdown from 3rd to 2nd - shifting points in partial load range too low"
- Check gas and control pressure cable settings
"No kickdown downshifts"
- Check fuse for poser supply to solenoid valve
- Remove solenoid valve. With valve removed, connect to power supply and check operation
- Check that kickdown control slide moves freely in housing, install replacement housing if necessary
"No brake shifts (4-3 and 3-2)"
- Adjust control pressure cable
- Check vacuum lines and connections for leaks
- Release brake shift plunger, if necessary separate shift slider housing
Hope this helps / Bruce
