The castrol 10-60w synthetic is the stock oil in my 2008 M3....thats a 8400rpm 4.0L V8.....so clearly the oil has to be up to the task at those rpm levels.....

Hi Turbochad , actually the owners manual says for a 20w-50 is an ambient temp range of minus 10 deg cel( 14 deg fah) to unlimited high temp , whats interesting is Porsche used to rate a 20w-50 down to minus 15 deg cel( 5 deg fah) ( I think pre 1980 ) in their owners manuals .
The reason I was pointing out the oil pressure gauge only going to 5 bar and not 10 bar that it should be like the 924 was is the words used most often in this subject is " The gauge is pegged at 5 bar " ,which is often terminology indicating that you have max oil pressure , but you have to ask yourself is it just on 5 bar or around 7 bar or even just under 8 bar ? , meaning you just do not know because the gauge supplied will not tell you .
I find it very interesting indeed that on the Mobil 1 racing web page it mentions that the ZDDP chemistries are twice that of their automotive street oils . The reason is that for this century Gas Powered (USA speak)/ Petrol powered cars have to comply to the ever stricter emmission proticols , ECEA etc , meaning the levels of ZDDP have to be reduced to comply and in their place is the later AW(anti wear) packages (read Boron etc) .
Now what I find amusing is that ZDDP is used at all in the Mobil 1 Racing oils and not just higher levels of the newer AW (anti wear) packages , so my question is why dont they just say that Mobil 1 Racing has twice the chemistries of the newer AW packages and no ZDDP at all .
Regards

I understand what you are saying now about the guage but if you are getting 5 bar of pressure at most any rpm that should be plenty of pressure. On my drive today in the 928 I watched the pressure with mobil 1 10-30 and it never idled at less than 2.5 bar and hit 5 bar at just under 2700 rpm. That was before and after a nice spirited drive through Colorado's beautiful canyons. Air temp was in the low 50's f.
What gets me these days is paying big money for synthetics and then having to sit both on forums like this and also with Porsche mechanics (old school guys) and listen to them go on about the best thing being a good dino oil. Like I said I do use Kendal GT1 in my ghia (the old dino oil green stuff). I had a couple of cases of it but am running out and now Brad Penn took over the old Kendall plant and makes oils that are similar in composition. Now I have to figure out where I can get Penn products for my Ghia. Once I find the source (I am sure there is one) I'll compare with the 5-50 M1 and decide which way to go for all three cars.

I have had good luck with that oil - 2 bar at idle and 5 bar at anything over 2.5 k rpm. Cold - 5 bar at idle constant.
Lots of great information in this thread. Guess I am a bit old school - like thin at cold so I get oil ASAP when I start the engine. Like the higher viscosity when the engine gets hot (e.g. hit a traffic jam).
Since I can not find M1 5W-50 here anymore, I am following this thread with interest as I look for a replacement (5C to 30C ambient temps during my driving season).
