I just want to say that my Dad bought an MGB way back in the early seventies, and his mechanic (who owned an all-MG shop) was a dead ringer for that Castrol guy.

I use M1 15-50 with the 5-speed, and M1 10-40 (high mileage) in the auto. I figure the 5-speed spends more time at high revs.

In States it's called Castrol TWS 10W60 I think...as I remember it was recommended for BMW M5 with the V8 5liter engine.
I tried it some years ago in my 944 turbo. It was good stuff, but at that time, I use to track my car and it was design for that. For normal street use, I had changed for "normal" oil as motul 6100 all synthetic 15w50 and it was less expensive and sufficient for that use.

I bought the Mobil 1 5W-40 turbo diesel at O' Reilly Autoparts. It was a good deal more expensive than the Mobil 1 15W 50 I was gettng at Wallyworld previously.

Maybe the 20W is less likely to leak out when cold. Perfect for that classic oil sieve.

I have used this based on recommendations by (Doug Hillary - search RL)

You gotta be careful. It isn't uniformly true that whatever "box" you buy at Walmart has the same contents as the "box" that costs more money at another store. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't.

Walmart has low, low prices because they sit heavily on their suppliers. And the suppliers can, will, and do in some cases supply Walmart with a lower-cost product. You just have to figure out why it is lower cost.

Though, I'm personally not worried about buying Mobil 1 oil from Wallyworld.

Anyone sent WallyWhirled Mobil 1 out for oil testing?

Last time I went there I got 2 big jugs of M1 10W-40 high mileage (least offensive oil weight they had) and 2 small plastic crates (milk crates). Hoping those are of decent quality.

Just shook me head as I walked by the shelves of Mobil 1 0W-20 and 5W-30.
Think they strapped weights to the bottles so they didn't float off the shelves.
Surprised they hadn't made 0W-15 yet to help certain domestic manufacturer and their 100,000 mile fill cars get bedder mileage.

I only buy automotive fluids at WalMart. I load up my big jugs of M1, etc, and make a beeline for the door.

BTW: Honey Bunny calls it 'Wall-E World'.

I commute daily with my heavily modified Scirocco G60 (1.9liter 8valve SC/250HP). Two years ago I melted two rod bearings using the much apraised M1 5W50 tri-synth. The usual hot oil temps were 115-120 degC. After switching to Castrol 10W60 some things became obvious: the car made definitely more HP (dyno), it ran aprox. 10degC cooler (oil temp), the mileage got better, the oil consumption was less and... I beat the pants off any pre '2005 Carrera any time. Of course I wouldn't use this oil in a 2009 Toyota Prius for instance...

Just reading the SAE weight on the tin is not the whole story. For a more informed decision you need to find out the actual viscosities of the oil at certain temps. with a Multigrade oil it is possible for it to meet the specs of say 10W40 and also 10W50.

I use Penrite 10W70 in the 88SE and 90GT - 3 Bar hot idle pressure. Needless to say they could sell it as a 10W50 as it meets the specs for that also. More importantly when I bought my current stock of it (another couple of oil changes) it had in excess of 1300ppm Zinc.

I like the HTHS numbers.
Tho sometimes trying to dig that number out of the spec sheets can be a real trail.
Mobil don't even put the numbers in the same place in their different oil offerings.

Use M1 15-50 from Wally World all the time, it's the red label stuff that has the higher ZDDP levels that is recommended on our cars. (read it on rennlist, it must be true). I did the comparison when our local WM was out of it and none of the parts stores (autozone, o-really, pepboyz) had it.

I did send out an oil sample to Black Stone using a boutique and one with M1 15-50, can't find the numbers anywhere though. Grrr. There wasn't much of a difference with both oils having 8k on them.
