I have left a message with the machinist who I expect will return my call today.

My 79 keeps unlatching when I hit a bump, and if I hit another bump just right it will latch again.

Is it possible to try to adjust it? The latch looks new as I have an older one, bottom piece that is broken, cracked.

It seems to be aligned well or she would latch again on the bumps.

Any help?

Stephen

Ron, thanks- let me know what you find out! I am in the middle of a temporary repair made complicated by the fact that the clinch nuts - the ones on the inside of the hatch that the socket head cap screws screw into BOTH came loose when I tried to remove the upper lock/latch . I am posting this repair, for better or worse, in its own thread. Argh.

The white plastic part which is analogous to the movable "bolt" in a dead bolt door latch and is located in the male part of the 928 latch on the hatch is usually worn past positive latching capability. Replace it with a new part which you can order from 928 Intl. for a small fee. It is easily replaced by pressing out the retaining pin but be careful not to loose the spring that is located inside and actuates the plastic part by pressing against the body of the male latch and the plastic part. (sorry for not knowing the proper names of these parts.) If you examine this white plastic part, you'll notice it may have a worn mating edge which has degraded to the more proper description of a groove worn along its width. If this condition exists it is definitely time to replace that white plastic part.

For what it's worth.. I would be interested. Mine has been cracked for some time and the hatch has finally started popping open. I ordered a used unit from 928intl but it will not have a matching key. I also orderd a new lower receiver section as the rubber liner for that part has disintegrated and as far as i know that part is not available separately.

Just a bump to ask if there is any progress on the machined part project?

Well I fixed mine. The piece seemed a little worn but not bad. I tightened the screws on the lock's brace that holds it to the window. All I did was unscrew it and tighten it down again and it has been holding great.

It has been like that all week. First the car was stuck in 2nd and I thought a significant amount of work would need to be done and it was just a pin on the rear coupling. Made a new one a little locktight and she's been great.

Then I went to the store and pushed the clutch in and she went to the floor and stayed there. Thought it was the slave cylinder or the blue hose after doing a search. I had no loss of fluid and when I was under the steering wheel say that the pin had backed itself out on the clutch pedal. Put a c clip on it and all better. cost of parts $0. Could have been ALOT. The 928 gods where shining down on me with a smile!

Hi Ron,

I know it's been a while since the last post but, where are you at with the lock housing reproduction? Mine is smashed but still can hold the hatch. I was going to attempt making the drawing in autocad but if you friend already did it, it would be great. Please let me know.

Thanks
Sylvain

If you're able to make an autocad drawing, go ahead. I was the one who was going to make the autocad drawing but have been too busy with other priorities and the latch body is still sitting on my desk staring me in the face. I will use r-2011 fyi. I can read earlier versions of acad. Send me the drawing and I will give it to the machinist to produce on his cnc machine. If things change soon, I might find some time to do it myself, but if you don't want to wait for it, go ahead.
928 parts are not a top priority for me presently and into the near future.

Same situation as last August. No time for 928 parts. The car sits while I drive my Saab. I did start the acad drawing but have more pressing things to do presently so it is nowhere near finished. Sorry but these are critically pressing times. I also have to figure out a way to make the acad drawing as accurate as is necessary or machine from my drawing and through trial and error and several machinings arrive at the finished product. At this point, I lack the patience for that process. Anyone care to jump in to produce the acad drawing from my draft?

While I'm in here, I want to caution those who still have functional latch housings, meaning small or no cracks. If you're careful closing and opening the hatch, your housing should last. My presently installed one is only finely cracked and it still works well, but I pamper it every time I close it. I lay the hatch down gently and then press it closed gently until it latches. No slamming. It should hold up a long time. They all crack but this has allowed me to extend the life of mine quite a bit longer. The latch housing I have as a pattern to make the acad drawing is also cracked so it is not totally accurate. I wonder if an uncracked one even exists?
