Help- 1982 928 Gotti Edition- DEAD-9/21/2009
I purchased this 7/31/ 2009. Received it via common carrier 3 weeks ago. 1 family owned 86,035 car fax, clear title verified miles. It was purchased in Phoenix AZ new as a "Gotti Edition" Has original Gotti rims, but nothing else that I noticed different. Started it up Saturday at 1pm after 18 holes of golf. Smoke, turned off, FIRE GONE!! Burned through the fendor wells. Will be totalled, I am sick about it. It was perfect on the interior, and had 5 dings that I was going to repair in spring and give it a wet sand to sort it and make it close to show quality for my daily driver. Fortunately it was fully insured, I do not want to get hosed by insurance company. I know I purchased for less than it was worth. Where do you suggest to get an accurate value? I already pulled classic NADA. Any help would be truly appreciated. Pending settlement, the interior seats were in great shape, rear quarters and glass perfect and NOW only has 3 Original Gotti rims since ONE MELTED!!!!

sorry to hear this, hate to see another nice one go down
I've never heard of a "Gotti" edition 928, and the Gotti wheels were never offered as a factory option, not sure insurance will consider this

Consider yourself lucky IF you get what you paid for it PLUS the shipping and registration costs..... There was no " Gotti edition " and the adjuster will see just another old 1982 Porsche 928 . Insurance companies are funny about these things they seem to think that the money you paid in premiums belongs to them ! They are very reluctant to start giving it back ! Cars.com .... search for 928s lists ten 81-84 cars.....lowest is 82 with 99k miles for $3,990, HIGHEST ASKING IS OVER $12,000 ...But the insurance companies assume that asking price is NOT the actual selling price and typically discount the adds by about 25 % or so. They also use Craigs list adds to set pricing and we all know that a lot of junk and salvage title cars which fail smog etc. get listed there , free adds bring out the best !

Sorry for your loss.............
BUT one of the first things to do when you get a new Used 928 is service it before it gets put into operation.
That means going through all of the systems .
The usual ones are timing belt/water pump, power steering leaks, ATF leaks, Replace the heater control valve and the short hose and replace the FUEL lines, change the oil and filter as well as inspecting the air cleaner.
If you cant verify that these steps were completed then you should assume that they do in fact need to be done ASAP.
The fact that it developed a fuel leak is the result of not doing this step.
The other thing to consider is that since you paid less than what it was worth then it should have been a good indicator that major service was required,.
Goodluck with your insurance company, i hope that you get a good settlement, and you can probably sell off parts of the car, if you buy it back

Thank you, for the info, it truly was a nice clean car, seller told me he went through all fluids, before shipping, I actually was getting it ready to go to my mechanic as soon as I picked up a switch for one of the windows and the book for its specs.

This is what happens when you don't post pics here as soon as you buy your car!
Sorry for your bad luck - hope you win the battle with the insurance company.
