Well, Mike was in my neighborhood this morning and stopped by for a shot at a title match between him and my 87.
After about half an hour (give or take 45 minutes...and with the help of a friendly stray cat) we finally got the crank position sensor out of the engine. Notice I didn't say "removed"...

I think I found the plug for it, but it looks like a lot of parts are going to have to be taken off to get to the plug. Any advice guys? We stopped there and decided to turn to the forum for extra assistance. Mike lent me two c.p.s. to try out. One is brand new, the other is used. But I can't figure out how to, or even confirm, I have the right plug because everything is so cramped in there...

Yep, that's the right plug. Now I have to figure out how to get it disconnected without taking the intake off..... (cars in the street.)

I think all you have to do is take the MAF out with the rubber neck. page 1 post #5. you may have to take the fuel rail plastic cover off if you need to take the rubber neck out.

You should be able to get it out by just getting the MAF out of the way, but you will need to take the Pass. side fuel rail cover off and a long screwdriver to access the screw on the clamp where the MAF mates to the rubber neck.

I'm thinking better light and maybe removing the heater valve, but in hindsight some kind of further testing is seeming smart. Last time I tried this kind of trouble shooting I printed large format copies of the wiring diagrams on the cds.

Anybody know if the cps can be tested with a simple meter?

Someone please answer that question... While your at it, can a maf be tested with a meter?

CPS needs an osciliscope to test as far as I know. MAF can be read for ohmage on setting by testing, teh actual hotwire needs a bench test.
I can come by tomorrow and help you install that tester and such if you like.
