Default Nitrous 928

update 12-24-09: added Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekScFhl5Fdk

Hi all, first I did use “search” and read all the Nitrous threads I could find.
Someone actually was looking for where to place the Nitrous nozzle on a 85/86 but the thread ended, another showed where it was done on an S4 and they said it worked well however the car had other issues and it was removed.
Andrew O. purchased his system for his first car (16v) from Mark K. and both were happy with the results of a 75 hp shot, but I wanted a bit more at least 100 to 150

I did a bit of reading pros/cons and decided a Progressive Controller was the best way to bring up the boost/charge, similar to that of a turbo or supercharger. I also didn’t want to monkey around with pressing a button at the correct time/RPM, I know me and I know would screw that up. The Progressive Controller also allows you to put in the big jets (150 HP) and dial to back and much more.

The rule of thumb out there for Nitrous is, get your engine running as good as you can then take out 1 degree of timing for every (edit) 25 hp of Nitrous you add (I an using the Lo- Octane loop to remove 3) also don’t push for greater than 50% of the HP than your engine makes stock, so a 150 shot is “safe” for a 300 hp engine.
That is if it is a well built engine and the 928 power plant is just that, well built, after all look at how they hold up to DR’s and Murff’s Kits.

I completed the wiring yesterday afternoon and programmed the controller for it to come on at say 3k and stop at say 5k using a straight 30% of 150 hp (no curve). Then I called Andrew for some motivation to actually trying it !!!
I starting working on this before Sharks in Hell, so it has taken me some time to gather all the parts, plan the layout and fabricate the brackets. Don’t know why I was hesitant about actually arming it and hitting the peddle because….

WOW what a blast I did (6) 2nd and 3rd and 1st and 2nd runs with my 18 yr old son. Then back to the garage to give her a good once over (no leaks, everything still attached) and re-program in a 30 to 50 % curve, hitting 50 % by 4k same RPM settings.

Headed down and picked up Dennis and nailed it in first and said; “that’s w/o” and flipped the switch’s and nailed it in 1st and 2nd and said “that with”, we both had BIG **** a$$ grins on our faces.

This project actually produced better that expected results and I am only at 50 %, I won’t go higher until I can get a data logger on her to see how the mixtures is.

Thanks goes out to Dennis and Andrew the support and for the Wide Band OT sensor and the spare Innovative logger that Andrew had laying around

However it will be a while before I get all that setup, I also want to add an auto-bottle warmer and remote opener and a way to view the stats in the drivers seat. But for now I need to stop spending so much time in the garage, fall is in the air.

Here is how I did it, enjoy

edit: Pic's won't upload right now I'll try later.

Cool! There was an S with nitrous at Frenzy 2 back in '98... When he hit the juice it was obvious as the exhaust note shot up an octave or two and the volume went way up!

Great job, the install really looks good. You nozzel location looks very similar to the one I did on my S4.
I too was running a 150 shot and never had a problem with a lean mixture.

I think the progressive controller is a huge saftey feature (much more engine friendly). You have a good point; In the heat of the moment its hard not to hit the button too soon coming off the line.

I had a timing belt issue and had to get the heads worked on and at that time I decided to go with the Murf SC is the reason I uninstalled the NOS setup. Just a note for your peace of mind, when I dismantled the engine there were no negative signs or issues because of the nitrous use. Pistons looked great etc. etc.

I still have the blanket warmer laying around somewhere with thermostat. (I think I used the relay for something else) You are welcome to it just email or PM me your address. It really helps keep the pressure constant once the bottle gets down to 1/2 full or so.

Thank you Dave and yes I will be happy to help you get rid of that useless bottle warmer

My "fun stuff" budget is maxed this year

I really tried to do a clean and stealthy install, the stock carpet covers the bottle but I am going to make up something better.

Your car was one of the ones that gave me the MAF idea as some people place them after the Throttle body, but Nitrous Express recommended two to six inches before and the MAF was easy to do that. If I recall yours entered from the front and mine comes in from the back as there was no room to run the lines on the 85/86.

I pulled the Relay power from the jump post w/ an in-line 40 amp (under the post wire cover) and got all six wires, four from the Relays one for fuel pressure safety switch and the one main power through the Firewall main wire harness hole all wrapped in tape.
I pulled the switched 12 volts from an un-used fuse slot on the CE and place an in-line 5 amp fuse there.

I still have to mount the controller and relay under the dash, the Maximizr 3 controller worked great w/ our cars even the WOT wire is the same white w/Red stripe.
I had to set the RPM multiplier to divide by 2, and not X 4 as was stated in the manual for a V8, it comes on only slightly higher (200 to 300 RPM) so I compensate w/ the program settings.

PM sent, and thank you very much for the warmer and the engine observations, maybe I’ll push it a bit high after I go through this bottle (that should be soon)

Dave

Hi

I have a little experience Of Nitrous so a couple of helpful comments...I hope

Firstly with the MAF , as its so far from the cylinders you will be getting a soft hit from the Nitrous which is good, but you will not get the full effect of your jetting and the liquid Nitrous will start "phase change" before it hits your cylinders....

The effect of this for example is that say you are running 50 hp jets, if you dynoed it you would see roughly 30 to 35 hp extra power...

Secondly, the bottle heater...when you start using it (as you should) it will keep the pressure up to the ideal 950 psi (you have got a pressure gauge in the system I hope ?)

Pressure in the bottle will also depend a LOT on the ambient temperature ???

When the pressure is up to 950 you will need to change your jetting to suit....

All the best Brett

Hi Brett and thanks for the suggestions & comments.
Nitrous Express recommends 2 to 6 inches before the Throttle Body and have tuned their jets for 1000 PSI, I was at ~900 yesterday, so yes it would be down on nitrous making HP. The jets don't need to be adjusted as long as the bottle pressure is maintained.

Andrew was talking about a Dyno run soon and I do want to see what the real numbers are.

Thanks you,
Dave

Buy an extra bottle.

No issues.....
Use the highest octane fuel you can buy in your area, 93 here and all is well.
I chance the plugs every 6 months or so..to look at their condition and they are cheap.

That's Cool to know, I have an extra bottle on the way as Nitrous Express had a "Deal" last month,. If you purchased your system from a retailer and sent in the barcode along w/the $15 shipping charge they would mail you a 10 lb bottle! Three weeks have passes and they have yet to cash the check

I did talk the local guy in to filling my first bottle for free (I think he grew tired of me stopping by after work and asking questions)

Looks like you used an NOS system, how much of a shot and how are you activating it?

Activated with the kick-down switch and jets are 64/38 if I remember correctly, about 120/130hp.
