Patents are for things. Things that do things.
For example, Greg could patent his oil baffle. Anyone who tried to copy and sell it would be in violation of that patent.
Or Hans could patent his shifter. Again, he would control who made and sold it.
Stuff like identification numbers, or words are Trademarked or copyrighted.
In this case, it would most likely be a trademark.
