Jim - for all of the considerations you have had so far, paint has always seemed to be part of any car's potential for you. There is no crime in repainting a car, even a black one. Pic your color and buy Ron Perry's car and paint it. You'll be way ahead when done.

This may sound awfully flip, but the absolute best way I know of to find a nice 928 is to wave money. Forget about all the deals where you hope to shave $3k off an asking price, or catch a hot car during the first 15 minutes its on craigslist.

Post what you are looking for, what your location is, and how much you are ready to pay in cash for a very nice example. Nice cars will find you. As far as I know its never failed when the cash offer was reasonable.

I looked at that car last Nov. They were asking $12-14K range. It wouldn't start, the paint is beyond help, and I have seen interiors on $2K OB's that were in better shape. I offered them $5000 then, now after a year of working on my two cars, I wouldn't give them $3000 for it unless I planned on stripping it down for parts. It is a rolling parts/money pit car.

You need to decide on a series that you want. There was a time when you were looking at the OB, the 85/86, and S4. They are very different cars, even though they carry the same model number.

If you want an S4, I would get a very nice S4 needing very little work. If you want a S3 you can get a bit less car, a lot less cost, but be prepared for some DIY. If you want an OB, shop the OB and find one that has what you like.

I think you want an S4, but they are very hard to find without sunroof, and you being tall I understand the problem with that. Roger has a fixer OB Euro in powder blue that needs full resto. It is a solid base car that needs a bit of everything. I think it could be a driver for about $2500 over what ever you get it for from Roger. Less if you're willing to DIY on a 928. After that, it'll need a respray, and finally some interior refresh. If I didn't have two already and a pissed off wife, I was going to buy it and save it. It's too nice to break up, but will require someone with some cleaning and fixing skills. Sean is right there as well, and he could bring it up to driver status for you before it even leaves the shop.

I'd like to see the car saved, but it's gonna need to be someone looking for a long term car, not a flipper. I agree about black too, although the 928 looks good in black I still don't like the color.

Well I have been guardrail to guardrail from a what I have been looking at perspective. I really don't have a preference OB versus S4, auto versus manual. At this point I have considered everything that falls into my price range and is a color I like. My major goal is to get a shark that I can drive, fix up along the way and enjoy learning about these great cars from all the super people I have met so far.

Not looking to flip it and cetrtainly not make money on them based on all of your experiences that I have enjoyed reading about! Ideally I would like to see my sons drive her long after I can't anymore.

Think I need to learn a lot more before I can develop a preference. In the mean time I am a hands on type and figure the best way is to get my feet wet.

Well I see that the CO has a new listing in Craigslist for this car with an asking price of $9300, down from $9500. Guess that means they did not accept my offer! I was beginning to become concerned that they would Plenty other sharks in the ocean.
