No affiliation, converts to $14500 USD and 110000 miles, not too bad.

I think if you wanted to make the field car like this one, you would have to put 20 G's into it and it still will be an S4 not a GT.
This one being a true Canadian GT is probably pretty rare. I am not sure how many GT came here, can't be too many. Lots of GT's posted here are asking 15 - 18 grand USD, so this one is priced in the ballpark for sure.

I think if that field car was a 5-speed, it would be a GT. They did make them in '89 too but I have to brush up on the info. BUT you are 100% right, that one would need a $hitload of time and money to get it right.

I believe in 89 you could get the S4 in auto or a 5 speed and the GT 5 speed. In 1990 the S4 was auto only and the GT was the manual transmission car.

I looked into this. Got some pix of the car. Spoke with the owner.
Then found out the Gas Guzzler tax of $4500 applies to this car.
And 2.5% import tax.
There's another GT in BC, Canada. Its a Japanese car though. A lot more work to get in the US than a Canadian car.

That gas guzzler tax kills the price to import it south of the border that is for sure. I wonder what would happen if you bought a cheap one from the 80's for like 4 grand and tried to import it. would they charge $4500 gas tax? Seems kind of absurd.

Not to resurrect this thread but I am looking at a 1988 S4 in Canada. It seems unclear if the Gas Guzzler tax would have to be paid or not...and at least for an 88 S4, according to the EPA schedule, the combined MPG is 20.9 and therefore $1300 in gas guzzler tax. The tax, if declared and collected would be $2600 for a 1990 GT 5 Speed (based on 17.7 combined). The combined formula is not "normal" mpg...some homogenized methodology; the cost would not have been $4500. That would be if you had used City MPG only and not referred to the schedule.

I apologize for asking on the forum perchance someone already has done this. This was the closest thread to the situation. Silly me. I'll stop asking any questions or advice here and if I do, I'll just create one more thread so that there are even more threads here.

I spoke with the Customs Office and US Treasury Dept last summer and got a lot of cryptic answers.
There are two forms that must accompany the car into the US. I don't recall the names or form numbers since its been a while but one was for the EPA and the other for the DOT.
When asked if a copy of any of them go to the IRS, the person on the phone said "maybe" one goes to the US Treasury dept. Nothing was known as a fact other than the two forms had to be filled out. Further questions were answered with speculation and "I don't know. We just send them to our US Customs Office headquarters.".
The local DMV office said all they needed was the title, and the same two forms. They would collect only state sales tax. Nothing is sent to the US Gov't.
A call to the IRS was also somewhat perplexing. They said you must fill out the gas guzzler tax form and submit it along with your tax return on 4/15 and pay the tax according to the schedule on the form.
They didn't know if a copy of the EPA or DOT forms were sent to them when a car is imported by an individual.

That is exactly what I found from their websites as well: Completely cryptic answers. I think it's one of those IRS things where if they don't find it in 3 years-you're off scott free. However, if they do find you-pentalites, interest and potential repo of the vehicle.
The broker I spoke with this morning said there is New York State Gas Guzzler but I don't think he knows or even cares about the Feds...I will check with my accountant and also try a few local IRS offices.
Thanks!
Michael
