So the WSM quotes "dry"....but I'm wondering what accessories are included in this weight?

Flywheel (which one)
AC
Airpump
Alt
Power steering pump...

In the quest for science....I will remove several of these items from the 16V and reweigh it

Okay I work really fast.......Clint just removed a bunch of stuff off the 16V and it is now 55lbs lighter at 540lbs (245kg)......he removed the AC compressor and lines, Air pump, Fan and bracket, and power steering pump...... He also weighed the 32V clutch assembly (single disk, GTS) and flywheel..those weigh 41 and 9 lbs for a total on the 32V engine of 489lbs (222kg)

Interesting to see the '81 M28/10 engine is the lightest @ 245Kg.

Anybody know the difference in weight between the cast iron 16V exhaust manifolds compared to the stainless 32V manifolds?

disclaimer: I don't have the little spec book for the earliest cars, so ...

And, based on Iceman's post (thanks, btw) and the books, there's ~40kg missing off the 32V engine.

Show of hands - anybody think Porsche might not have been consistent on how the engines were dressed when they were weighed?

so i removed all unnessesary parts off the 16v and wind up with 540lbs. that still has the exhuast and clutch. well i could remove and plug the EGR for another 4lbs but the EGR will give better mileage during cruiseing.

I wonder if greater weight implies greater strength?

Its one of the reasons I am curious about which parts weigh differently.

+/- 60lbs of cast iron headers arent nessesarily better.

i have my '81 M28 engine completely disasembled and i have a accurate scale nearby. anyone have a disassembled 32v to compare piece by piece?

I need to look into some kind of scale, but I have an 85 32v torn down completely, and chunks of various 16v motors.

Not all that long of a list though;
Block top*
Block bottom*
Crank*
Rods
Pistons
Oil Pan
Heads*
Cam carrier
Cams
Intake
Exhaust
Misc covers etc maybe 10 lbs.
Dampener
Flywheel

*stuff that might be interesting.

"but the EGR will give better mileage during cruiseing. "

Nope.

EGR lowers NOx production by replacing some of the air with inert gas, thereby lowering combustion temperature. Doing so lowers performance and mileage, which is why it isn't used much any more.

yes it replaces the fuel air mixture with inert gasses that fill the cylinder during cruising reducing the fuel volume nessary to run the engine. it does help. but over years it does clog the intake with carbon and reducing performance

ok i have a list of the major 16v componets and weights, now all parts are very clean, id eat off of them so there is no extra dirt weighing in here with lbs /Ozs:

Spider intake with legs and clamps ~15Lb /2 oz
Passenger head with valves, springs and ISC ~ 26 /14
Driver head with valves, springs ~ 24 /6
thottle body and lower intake bend complete w/ sensors and hardware ~ 10 /6
1 piston and rod w/rings ~ 3 /6
Upperblock with studs ~ 90 /2
Crank w/o gears ~ 52 /6
Girdle ( lowerblock) ~ 24 /2
oil pan ~ 14 /14
waterpump ~ 4 /1
flywheel ~ 8 /6 ( 32 valve one from brians after resurfacing was just over 9
most of the engine hardware in a bag ~ 7 /8
cam boxes ~ i forgot them at the shop where i was cleaning them, ill weight them later.

total 281 /8 ozs

Clint
GREAT DATA.....very nice.........so that accounts for about 1/2 the weight of the 16V engine we weighed....sure its got oil and probably some water in it...but that can't be more than 20lbs....

Don't forget they switched from Aluminum intake and valve covers to Magnesium. The design is substantially smaller with thinner diecast walls and magnesium will weigh 1/3rd less than its aluminum equivalent. I would assume this helps keep the weight down. So if the aluminum parts weigh in at 50 pounds the same parts in magnesium would weigh 33 pounds.

Anthony, I believe magnesium weighs 34% less by volume than aluminum and 50%
less than titanium. Titanium weighs 42% less than steel. In case you wanted to know.
I have machined and built a lot of special magnesium and titanium parts for my motorcycles.
