Default Door Tweeter replacement

I recently ordered a set of Infinity components from eBay, but when they came in they were minus a tweeter, prompting a run to the local electronics store to see what I could find.

As it turns out, they had a plethora of these Polk SL6001's at $8, which are almost exactly the same diameter as the ones that came out, making fiberglassing the doorcards unnecessary, and means it should be possible to reuse the factory grills for a stock install.

They're 8 ohm, 45 Watts RMS.

Here's more about them :

For those of you in the DFW area, the shop is Tanner Electronics in Carrollton/Farmers Branch area.

In the picture, the one on the left is the stock ITT tweeter, on the right is the new Polk SL6001. The only nod to fitment is that the posts are outboard of the hole, so it will be necessary to cut a pair of 1 cm notches for the posts to go through.

Richter, good find. If you ordered Infinity components with included crossovers, make sure and check the output wattage/resistance to the tweeter. The last thing you want is get everything installed, then have it sound garbled...

I'm in the market for a door speaker upgrade. How is the fit on the Infinity's? These tweeters might be a good option if I can't find a good component set. The MBQ's I'm seeing now (210 series) look too deep, and there's all the speculation that they aren't as good as they used to be, but they are also a lot cheaper than they used to be.

That's true - when I told them I was missing the crossovers and the tweeter, they refunded my money and let me keep the main 5.25" components. I sourced the Infinity Reference series Crossovers from AllElectronics for either $6 or $8 a/piece. I figure for no more than I'm invested, if it sounds bad, I can still go a different way and not be out much.

Don, if you don't have any luck with MBQ's or Infinity's, try the JL's. I've always been a big fan of JL's sound/$$. I have a set of components mounted in the rear on my 80'. They fit in the stock location, no modification necessary. [I made a small package tray where the tool tray used to be for mounting the crossovers... my car was missing the tool tray when I bought it anyway]

The magnet on the Infinity is a bit deep, and the hole is a bit small, because the component setup I went with is 5 1/4". It's difficult to tell if it'll fit stock, because there's already a piece of Dynamat in there, so I'm robbed of a bit of depth. A nice black speaker ring should give me enough extra depth, offset the cone to be the right diameter and still look like a factory install. I'll see how it goes!

I bought a pair of Audiobahn components, pried the tweeters out of their mountings and then expoxied them into the original factoryplastic housings. Came out all very nicely, let me re-use the OE speaker grills, etc.

Now if I could just find some shallow-depth 4" mid ranges!!
