Default '78 5speed....hard shifting

Good Evening.........My car has always shifted very smoothly, gliding between all gears with no effort/graunch/problems. Even shifhing between 1st and reverse was super smooth. My wife and I go on vacation for a few days and the dog watcher takes it for a drive....with my permission of course. We get back and when I get in to move the car something is wrong.....the car is reluctant to go into 1st gear and VERY reluctant to go into reverse. It seems to drive okay....but seems to want to pop out of 3rd gear once ina while. No gear whine, no grinding, just tough to engage 1st/reverse. I know that the person did not abuse the car in any way......and he would have told me of any problems during normal driving. I feells like the linkage is out of adjustment....can this be adjusted with the trans in the car?? Can i get to the top of the trans from inside the car, under the rear console?? Thoughs????

I think I read something about this being a bushing resting underneath the shifter. It can crack and break, resulting in sloppy/poor shifting. There is an adjustment, which I also need to do, but I haven't had time to go get into it and do it. Hope that's the problem and not a busted tranny. Good luck

There's also a plastic lined ball cup that the shifter pivots in that can disintegrate rather quickly.

This sounds like the same problem my fathers '82 5 sp just suffered from. It was shifting fine one day, then the next day he went to drive the car and it refused to engage any gears. We had a feeling it was the shift linkage and after some investigation we concluded the rear shifter coupler bushing had disintegrated.

yep, the issue/solution that mr. 928 obsession described is what i would think. i had a similar problem and the front plastic ball cup was fine while the rear plastic coupler bushing was cracked. it makes the shifter sloppy and thus alters the amount of shifter travel to obtain a particular gear. it's located right above the TT to trans connection.

Where can I source this bushing and can it be installed from above ( rear console access ) or from below, or does the transaxle have to come out???

well I don't know about the tranny problem, but I was able to video your dog watcher taking your car for a drive. There could be a correlation to the sudden tranny problem? Here it is:

Ken - I have a pair of brand new rear bumperettes that I'll sell to you for $75 plus shipping. They are in excellent shape. The mounting tabs on the rear (which you can't see) were modified to fit my 78, but I didn't like the newer hollow style so I took them off; they are virtually new. I also have my original solid type bumperettes that have some scraping on the left side bumperette (the right side is in good shape). I'll let you have those for $35 plus shipping for the pair. Let me know if you want either set.

Ken - I sent you 2 pm's yesterday. Let me know if they didn't make it for some reason. I took pictures, but there is no way to send them to you in a pm, so send me your email addrress and I'll get them to you. The distance between the bumerettes is 14.5 inches. Also, the solid type weigh 5 pounds each, and the hollows are 3 pounds each.

You can embed them in a PM by using the HTML tags like you would in a post. ( I just learned this awhile ago and thought others would like to learn too)
