Default 1983 928 5 spd clutch travel

I did a search but ended up with a ton of postes for everthing but a 928.

I drove my first 928 manual yesterday on I car I am looking to buy and have a couple of questions.

Trany seems to shift smoothly but 1st gear seems difficult to get a smooth start. Seemed it require a lot og gas and a slow release to not kill it, which I did a few times. Clutch travle , at least for 1st, seemed pretty long.

Is this normal or indicative of an issue?

Secondly there was a yellow up arrow light that illuminated on the speedo if I remember correctly. I have seen shift indicators in other cars, is that what this is and how/when does it illuminate?

Thanks

Jim

I have 84 5 speed daily driver. Its well used.

If yours shifts gears smoothly, and stays in them, and doesn't pop out on decel, you are way ahead from a gearbox perspective.

The start-out should be smooth, though. Should be able to slip it in with any desired amount of slipping. You may be looking at needing a clutch set. I replaced mine for similar reasons as you give, though the performance specifics are getting fuzzy with time, but I also had some gear to gear grinding. Hydraulics condition can play a role, too. The more you search on this, the more conflicting information you will find, I'm afraid.

How was the rest of the car?

Wonderful little invention for our American cousins after the 73 fuel crisis. Tells you when to shift to get the best fuel mileage. I think I drove with that light on all the time. lol

That and the blanked out speedo after 80..... you should be afraid if the speedometer doesn't tell what you are doing. oooohhh scary, better slow down

Does it ever grind going into reverse? If so the clutch is not releasing 100%. Thy synchros in the forward gears can / will mask a rubbing clutch. 1st and 2nd gear go through the most abuse which could be why 1st is tight, that synchro is well worn.

Just one scenario.

That light is designed to come on at random intervals, flicker occasionally, and generally distract the driver. Interesting invention. And the clutch should be smooth, engaging at about 1/2 travel, and smooth takeoff. Could be a myriad of reasons for it, including if you're used to a Honda - it's definitely longer travel with a wider engagement than a Civic. But if the gearbox shifts smoothly it sounds good, and might just need adjustment.

Well I am leaning towards user error at this point. It shifted and dwon shifted into all other gears well. Again muy first time in a shark manual and only 3rd time total so clutch travel experience is from non-porsche cars.

Thanks for all the input. The car is in no where texas so a professional PPI is out of the question. If I can get a low enough price it is probabaly worth the gamble.

This is the Albany texas car I was looking at. Went by and saw it yesterday while up in DFW. No maintenance records. Starts immediately and runs well. AC blew coolish for a sec and then warm. Some issues with electrial swirches, likely non use as the side mirror switch was inop initially and then started working. Car accelerates and stops well. Steering pulls to the left. Tires nearly new. Interior is about a 7. Seats good, carpet good, dash is peeling at vents and a small crack in pod, rear quarter panels warping. Sunroof does not work. But body is real nice save a couple of stone chips and one bubbled up quarter size rust area below left quarter window.

You said it takes a lot of gas to get started...It may be low on power could just use a tune up and I would check the compression
