IMO: A basic timing belt job - the minimum parts below - will take 8 to 10 hours at a well-equipped shop. Factor in a broken water pump bolt, a sprocket or three, checking cam timing before and/or after, and a couple or five WYAIT(*) items and a good range is 10 to 18 hours for a complete and methodical job.

(*) For instance: it only takes a few minutes to change the power steering hoses on the fluid reservoir - that are leaking most of the time - while you're doing a belt job. But, 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there can add up.

So, assuming shop rates between $90 and $140 a realistic range is $1000 to $2500. You do, of course, need to gain some idea of what you are actually paying for though.

Prices are per my 50 year old memory and these are the min parts required. This list assumes cam gears and oil gear are good to go.
The minimum list of timing belt parts must also include:
2 x Idler Carrier Bushings - $36
Idler Roller - $50?
Main Roller - $75?

But, the minimum kit - conti belt, rebuilt WP, tensioner (boot, clamp, gasket, o-ring) bushings and both rollers is about $400. And add in $20 or so JIC for new fasteners. And on pre-S4s, a new pivot bolt should be installed too.

Every other belt (assuming 40k mile per belt) you're looking at $300 or so for sprockets.

I heard the same from plenty of folks around here. One guy I know was quoted $3000 to check and set the belt tension.

Another guy was told by a Porsche Service Manager: "We don't like to work on 928s because they tend to fall apart when we put them on a lift."

Bottom line is that the average Porsche dealer doesn't want 928 business.
