Perhaps I've watched too much Overhaulin', but I am envisioning the seam weld in the lower right corner of the frame being compromised by rust once this piece is media blasted. Not sure if I'd want to be sitting on a potentially weakened seat frame in the event of an accident.
There are about a million trashed 928 sets out there. Why completely rebuild this one?

I took another look at the frame today. I did some not so scientific experiments by jumping up and down on it over a 2x4 trying to see if it would flex, bend or anything like that. My 180 lbs couldn't get it to move at all. I also took a hammer and awl to it and couldn't poke any holes through.
I looked a little closer at the drivers side and its in a little better shape. I think I'm going to clean them up after all. The POR 15 or OSPHO sound like a good idea.

don't let yourself get psyched out. These frames are built like tanks. And from what I see, what you have is just surface rust.
I'm actually more worried about your set of tests than I was about the rust

POR15 is a fantastic product. Reacts chemically with the rust. You actually need rust there for it to work. The only Achilles heel of this treatment is UV, which is not a problem for a seat frame.

Any of the spray on rust converters would be perfect for that application. The car probably had a leaky sunroof and the constant evaporation in the carpets and matting could cause the rusting you see.

I found some of the OSPHO and POR-15 at the local auto paint store today. Wow, I didn't realize that POR-15 is over a hundred dollars a gallon! Although, I think that it can be ordered on-line for cheaper. I've been a little impatient lately, so I went with the OSPHO instead, which isn't as expensive.
I wire brushed the frame and applied the OSPHO earlier today. It says to leave it overnight before you do any priming or painting. So, I guess I will have to wait and see what happens.

It took me awhile but I finally got some pics of my results. It took a couple of coats of the OSPHO but it wasn't difficult. Then a few coats of Rustoleum primer and black paint. All in all I think it turned out just fine. Paul is right these things are very strong. Thanks guys for all of the input.
