Default 928S vs. S4

What is the difference betweens these two.

It seems the S4 has a few more ponies and is the most popular, but is the S a better bang for your buck?

I would assume the S4 has better brakes, may an air bag and more modern stuff.

Is one more reliable than the other?

Thanks for all your positive thoughts

86.5S has the S4 (commonly called that anyway) brakes. All other S cars have smaller brakes.

S4 rated at higher HP but I have seen both tuned well above factory number and have seen 5spd S's make well above what my auto S4 makes on the rollers.

I think the S4 is MUCH more modern looking (that is subjective of course)... Lip spoilers vs. the more aerodynamic front and rear bumper covers and rear aero wing on the S4's...

Interiors are the SAME ('85 and up anyway)...'83/'84 have different seats.

S's (though the later ones were already getting heavy) tend to weigh at least 200# less than S4's so that is a plus for the S cars.

US 4.7S engines can probably survive a T-belt failure '85 and up 32V cars CAN NOT survive that failure. It is a rare failure and nearly unheard of if you just change the belt every 5 years or so.

Wider rear wheels on the S4 but the same style of wheels.

What am I leaving out guys???

Check out the 928 EVOLUTION DVD and you will see them moving and stationary to get a feel for the differences as they look to the eye.

thank you for the input....it sounds like the 928S, 85-86 is a better bang for the buck.

Kindia like a 911S versus a SC , of course that is my opinon.

When thinking about the 928 better get used to, bang for the kilobuck.

You need to find out which model floats your personal boat, and once you know a few kilobucks won't make you happy with something else.

Once you know what you want, find the best one you can buy.

If you think you like the older cars, get an 86.5. Old body, newer engine and brakes.

There's a hefty price difference just from 86.5 to 87 based on the aero changes. If you like the S4 better though, then wait for the right S4. I have an 85 that I'm thrilled with, but I still look at those S4 taillights and front clips and pine just a little.

I had an S4 and I like the look of the OB better however the best looking 928 is the GTS I'm getting best of both worlds true ob body and s4 power and brakes

The 86.5's have most of the advantages of the S4, minus the bodywork, for less cost today....sure you loose a few HP (288 vs 316) but the S3's are easy to mod to get S4 type HP levels....and if you like the old body style (OB) then thats the car for you....

Other than body, both have the same suspension and brakes, the 86.5 has a 5.0L 32V interference motor but does not have the "resonance" intake of the S4 or dual knock sensors which is why its tuned more mild...it does have "better" cams, but has to make do with smaller intake valves too compared to an S4.....

As a guideline an equally nice 86.5 will be a few thousand cheaper than an equally nice S4+...for example a nice S4 can be had for $15k....vs say $12k for a similar 86.5 both in excellent condition...

Hey James, I think this guy is in need of a copy of your 928 DVD! hehe
I personally love the look of the S4 compared to the OB, but now after seeing more I think I want an older model too.

There are lots of details about these cars to note. The 87s are prone to LH failure, not saying I wouldn't have one, just something to factor in. Of course after you factor it all in, your head will spin.

The 85/86 is thought to respond better to chips and supercharging.
Here's another, although it is a similarity: '85 and up are interference engines.

http://www.928s4vr.com/ is a good MY comparison source.

If and when i would purchase a 928 it would need to be atleast a 5.0 liter size. Nothing wrong with the other 928's, its just what i would want.

I just can't get past the old days, Rolling in my 5.0....just kidding of course. The picture above is still messing with my mind.
