Default AC Compressor Belt adjuster

Need a little help sorting out what needs to happen to get my AC compressor belt adjuster back to something resembling correct. At some point in the past, probably when the 134A conversion was done, a PO installed the adjuster bracket shown below.

The top end of the bracket is not connected to anything, just wedged against the crankcase.

There does not appear to be anyplace on the back side of the compressor mount brackets to attach this adjuster bracket.

The PET is not very helpful as it shows a turn-buckle type adjuster, but does not detail where the fixed end of the adjuster attaches. The Air Pump was deleted when I bought the car so it is possible the other end of the adjuster attached to the Air Pump. I am mainly interested in getting the end of this bracket off of the crankcase and having a clean undercarriage to install a nice aluminum belly pan from 928 Mosport. If anyone has or could take some pics of this area of their 1990 or later and send them my way or post I would really appreciate it. I may end up re-engineering the existing adjuster, but if the factory solution is quicker I'll probably go that route.

Thanks

Mike

Mike,
That looks like the correct factory adjuster but it should be on the front bracket not the rear.
It then attaches at a point on the block.

^^^ What he said. The correct point on the front of the block is the same 8mm (with 13mm head) bolt that secures the end of the airpump belt tensioner.

Thanks guys,

The PET shows exactly what you describe through MY89. For MY90 the compressor lacks the mounting ears at 12:00 and 6:00. Hence there is no where to attach the adjuster to the compressor. Here is what PET shows for the MY90-91. The compressor and bracket (9) are exactly what I have in place. Bracket (2) also appears to be what I have in place.

Below is the PET page for MY92-95. Seems I have some of the parts for this type adjuster, but part (20) has either been cut or is not the same as you can see from my pics and part (21) is missing. Further, I don't see anywhere to attach the strut (21) to the back of the bracket (2) I tried to find someplace on the front of the motor to attach the end of part (19) but found no empty holes.

Any ideas?

Its possible that whoever went to R134a installed a newer compressor?

My '88 MY has one bracket thats bolted to the engine in front of the a/c compressor with the other end of the bracket bolted to the compressor through an adjuster.

I no longer have the air pump but lets not confuse the issue; I'll get a pic.

They may have replaced the compressor during the switch, but it appears to be the correct compressor for the 1990 model year, which is what I have. If anyone could get me pics of the attachment points of the turnbuckle type adjuster shown in the PET for MY90 it would at least be a start. I just hate to start re-engineering and fabricating if it is not necessary.

Thanks again for the replies.

Excellent!! Thanks for the photos Rob. Hopefully in 6-12 months the underside of my engine will be as clean as yours.

So once again, it seems the 2nd string at Porsche was fabricating what ever type brackets they felt like since these don't remotely match what is in the PET. Now that I see it I feel like Homer Simpson DOH!!! Now I just have to locate that pesky mounting point on the block and hope it's not stripped or broken out.

More fun for next weekend.

Just for the hell of it I ordered one of the turnbuckle-looking things based on its part number. What I got was the same curved bar that mounts the tension adjuster on the front of the compressor. The PET picture is pure fantasy.

Glad you had some pics as I was lost trying to figure out how to attach the turnbuckle. I can always put together what I've taken apart and usually put together that which I have good drawings or photos of but the photos above show how it came to me. I still feel pretty foolish that I did not put together in my head how to use what was right in front of me.

Thanks again and don't you listen to Sean. It's just a photo shadow on the compressor, not actual dirt.

It's ok, the compressor in pic 2 and 3 is the one that came on the car. I tried to rebuild it but buggered the front seal, so I ended up putting in a rebuilt compressor from 928Intl. It was nice n' clean out of the box....

Working on a friends '84 a/c now (along with tierod ends and rack bushings) One of the PO's had fit a ford compressor to his car using turn buckles and U clamps. Apparently this worked ok until he ran over a 3-4" man cover that bent the whole thing backward. Upon disassemby of setup found that the bolt used was not correct size in front and the U clamp actually holds an L shaped bracket to compressor with a hole on top to mount rear bolt (also wrong size). Suggesting that he invest in correct compressor/brackets has fallen on deaf ears so far so it is now installed best can be. When new rack bushings installed I will figure another strap for him to aligne unit better, however his bigger problem is his rack and tie rod ( tire has about 1" play side to side) I told him NO driving on mountain roads until replaced and alligned.

This is a car I actually looked at to buy however some of the poor work done made me run ( actually walk fast with butt puckered) from it along with the 6k that was being asked. LoL I remember thinking god I would not want to work on this mess....now look where I am.

FYI... That 90* "elbow" on the 90-91 compressor bracket has a tendancey to crack and fail (mine did). I fashioned a new one, but it's not very good.

If anyone comes up with a better bracket system, let me know.
