Timing Belt Heebie Jeebies-My First 928!!!
Hey Folks,
Picking up a 1985 sweet ride in Dallas in about two weeks. 54K miles and the independent dealer states he doesn't know if the timing belt has been changed.
I won't be doing the work myself (initially) and would appreciate opinions as to whether I should ask the dealer to bring it to the shop for the TB/WP change and tensioner rebuild before I drive the 240 miles to Houston, or just glide back home, put 5K on it and then bring it in.
Thanks .

I would pull the passanger side cover and have a good look at the belt, maybe even check the tension. If the belt looks good, tracks fine and is tight enough, drive it. Are you capable to do the TB/WP job yourself?

Never changed a TB. Have been a motorcycle kind of guy for the passed 25 or so years. So I've turned a wrench or two...think I'll leave this first go around to the pros though.

If the car is in Dallas we may already know it.

Let Sean do it. His rates are a fraction of the regular rates, and he'll find whatever else needs sorting too. The 32V engine can eat your lunch if not maintained right.
He just did a black car that had been running for >12 years on the same belt! When we got it off, it was about 1 more hour from coming apart, and ruining a good engine. Either that, or trailer it home, and host a DIY party with beer.

This is as good as it gets for you. Sean and Roger can do a much better job than any dealer or P-car shop. Have them pick up the car and do a PPI first, then a TB/WP service if the car is worth the asking price, unless you have already bought it, in that case keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times......

Bill, got your e-mail and responded but forgot to attach the picture that Doc Mirror is talking about. So here it is and look forward to talking to you in the morning.
And thanks for the props guys, means the world to me.

That's an '88 with 48k on the clock. Original. Everything else was really good. You should see the underside of the belt. Doc Mirror could almost see sunshine through it. The owner was driving it pretty hard to OCIC and had no idea it was like this. It's now saved though.

The car is already there basically, experienced people can do em in no time flat. Get the car buttoned up and drive it back home like you stole it instead of worried the whole time home. The anus is a muscle and like other muscles it will only clench for so long!
