Default Lower ball joint question

Does anyone know what the difference between the 78-86 and the 86.5 - 95 steel ball joints are? Is there a difference in length?

Part numbers are 928.341.049.12 and 928.341.049.08 respectively.

I am having a camber issue on my right front and I am wondering it is caused by the PO putting in the later model ball joint.

Thanks!

It's a slightly different shape, since the later suspension has the joint upside down. I don't think the older eccentric adjustment pieces will fit the new joint.

Ted,
You have the early style ball joints on your car - looked at your pic you sent me.

How about the lower control arms, I know the later ones are 12 mm shorter then the earlier ones and have the word Porsche cast into them, any other differences?

I have the entire 86.5 front suspension sitting under my porch. If you want, come over and have a look at it and compare it to what you have.

Nothing meaningful meaning they are direct bolton but 12mm is enough difference already to make mixing parts useless in all but track cars.

I measured it last night, it is the proper one for the 85. Still a mystery why I can't get proper camber, I may have to take it to a frame place and get it checked out. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Ted, you can do a lot of figgerin on frame dimensions with a plumb bob and a tape measure, and some masking tape markers on the floor underneath. Start with the side-to-side comparison of mounting points for the control arms. Then compare the relative locations of ball joints to see if the arms are bent or the lower joint is distorted. The comparison of the pivot point locations will tell you if the frame is tweaked. FWIW, this is what the frame shop will do, except it's easier for them with the car sitting on the sspension but up higher off the floor on the ramps.
