I spoke to a Porsche mechanic here in Tucson yesterday who made me want to cry. It was clear he perfered the 911s but had some pretty nasty things to say about parts availability/ parts and shop costs of the 928s. In summary, he told me that the 928 is "rich man's" car requiring an expensive engine re-seal at around 100k miles, and potential tranny rebuilds at less than 100k. He suggested I get a 911 due to the reduced complexity.

That mechanic is ignorant as hell. I'd be afraid to bring a 911 there, or even a bicycle.

Porsche mechanics are not automatically 928 mechanics, he may know less about the 928 than the Santa at the mall.

Clearly you can be a poor man and own a 928, heck you don't even have to start out poor.

Most Porsche mechanics around here won't touch a 928, they will tell you that over the phone.

If you really want a 928 then buy one. It's only money, and some things aren't about how much money it cost. I've only had my 87 S4 for about 7 months. It needs a few things, but its 22 years old. I can tell you first hand that a 22 year old woman is far more expensive than a 928!! I've had both, both are a pain in the ***, but when they run right; "OH" what fun!! We're only here for a little while, have some fun, don't let life pass you by cause you was afraid to jump in the water.
If you get into a problem, there is more than enough talent here to help you out. All you got to do is ask. Once you find the shark you want, and its at home, you got tons of time to make it the drean car you've always wanted. I've found out that the things you love most are the ones that were the hardest to get.
