There is a 1989 928 S4,red over black, 117K miles, auto trany in my area for sale for $10K. I have never owned a porsche but at 53yo now is the time!
I have read in other forums to buy the most you can/willing to afford. Does this sound like a reasonable deal. Seems a bit too good to me. It is with a dealer and they do not have servcie records which is a bit of a red flag. Would much rather have a not so pretty car with better history.
Thoughts?

I know that car...used to belong to the Corvette Country guys...they went bust and reopened under a new name. That car has been for sale for AGES...literally YEARS! They started at nearly $20k 4 years ago IIRC. I don't think the car is bad...I think it belonged to one of the owners and he liked it. I think it was driven fairly regularly.
See if they will let you get a PPI done by Matt over at TPWS on N. Lamar at Peyton Gin Rd. LOVE to have another RLer here in Austin to join our merry little group!
We will be meeting at HOOTERS Lake Creek THIS Saturday too...you might come meet some of the folks and see what REALLY nice 928's can look like... You are welcome to come visit my place after and see what award winning 928's look like too. I also have a new DVD that you can buy that gives a VERY good (I am a little biased on this one) overview of the 928 and how they changed over the years.
You will need to schedule the PPI with Matt if you go that route.
Good luck and keep us posted! Love to see you on Saturday...Oh, lunch time... 11:30.
One more thing...this is just my personal opinion... I tell people if they can only have ONE 928 (and I can't imagine that personally! LOL! ;-) AND that they can't afford a GTS then make it an '89! If not an '89 then '88 then '87...

Thanks James. You are right about this car. Corvette country is closed and the owner now has it listed in craigslist. Looks very nice.
Thanks for the invite. I live very close and will take you up on the offer.
I have been over to talk to Matt about a 944 turbo he has been helping sell. I had been looking at 944/968's but once I started reading and researching the 928 it seems to be the car for me.

I like the 44/68 cars, but 928 just shames them for regular driving and will hound the crap out of them on a race track too!
Looking forward to meeting you on Saturday.

Almost all 928's shine up real pretty. The factory paint was of amazing quality, and the body is a classic design.
Condition under the paint isn't so easy to determine, it takes a professional with a LOT of experience in the 928 a couple hours in the shop and on a lift. Without a PPI, quality and value are pure guess work.

For reference, I paid $10.5k for my '87 S4 then put another $11k in it. If I had done a PPI before I bought it, I would have only offered $6k.
Do a PPI, don't trust that lying s.o.b. car dealer.
