Exactly. Unless you had the whole S4 clip to pull and redo all of it, forget it.
Your tranny and spoilers are really anything worth money unless you have a real clean interior of a common color. The motor is really the 'difference' in the 85 and if it doesn't work... there are definantly some things worth having off of it. I may have to think about some stuff I may need as I see S3s being parted left and right....

Could he not use an S4 motor with his 85 - 86 intake and harness, and just not hook up the hall and knock sensors?

well there is a big hole in the engine bay when i open the hood (there is no motor, someone wanted to put a chebby lump in there)

i bought the car to take the 5 speed parts and hold onto them for the meantime until i found an auto GTS. But that never happened and now i need to figure out what to do with the car.

if the only thing of real value is the transmission with LSD and spoilers then its really silly to part this car out. Its a pretty nice car in retrospect. There is no body damage and i would feel retarded parting it out.

Again, the idea of the S4 engine came about when there was an entire S4 car available, thats no longer the case so i will pass on that idea. Although i am curious why you couldnt run an S4 engine on 85-86 electronics. I am TOTALLY unfamiliar with the 85-86 cars, i know the S4's well but i dont know the S cars at all.

You could always contact Leslie in NJ. Didn't they put an S4 motor in an 85 Euro? Granted not exactly the same swap but could give some insight as to what needs to be done.

yeah i do recall that thread

however, i am not going to spend $5000 assembling parts to put a later engine in an earlier car that i mean only to sell.

The 85-86 S3 will just drop in so that would be my preference. This car with an engine and new timing belt and MM and pan gasket is worth maybe $8K +/- the way it sits now its a hulking lump worth maybe 2-3K

I would really only be looking to do an S4 engine swap if i had the entire car to pull from and thanks for the offer but no i cannot afford to spend $800 on electronics and then still need an engine.

If someone has got an S3 engine, please let me know.

Ryan,
The 87 engine will bolt right in and you can then use an 85/86 wiring harness on it. You will need to swap the TPS to the 85/86 style. And add the AIT sensor to the airbox. Neither are too difficult.
As well you would need to put an 85/86 FPR and the 24# injectors back onto the engine.

Course you will need the 85/86 flywheel with the 100-1 ring gear.

Or, you could leave the 87 FPR on there and go with Ken's chip setup.

The S4 TPS would work. It is the same as a S3 (944) unit, except that it rotates the other way.
