Default Sept. Issue of Automobile Mag. Features 928 as "Collectible Classic"

Hopefully not an Enzo:
The Sept. issue which features a story on the Panamera also profiles the 928 as a "Collectible Classic" in their Upshift section. Coincidence? Not too flattering an article IMO.
It's more of a story on how the 928 came to be - almost justifying the criticism that the 911 loyalists put on the 928. The first sentence is how the 928 was never accepted by the "Porsche faithful", as they consider it as a perversion of the brand's performance.
Basically a luke warm impression of the car. Nothing about the bang-for-the-buck factor, their timeless design, and the huge, tight-knit and growing group of 928 owners and enthusiasts. That's a huge component of what makes a "Collectible Classic" IMO.
Really this article should have either been written by somebody else if Automobile mag consider the 928 a Collectible Classic, or with its current content, it should have been a stand-alone special interest article.

Typical "Douchebaggery" by the the usual suspects. The only publications which gave the 928 it's proppers were Excellence, and Hemmings.

PS- What's up JP!

It seems to be way some of these collectable classic articles are written. BMW 850i one is similarly harsh.

The price range the published ($30k high) apparently doesn't include GTS models.

Maybe so for the 850i. I rather like the more rarer 840i V8. Still I prefer my 928.

Those that don't or never had a 928 will never understand superriority to the 911.

i have owned two 911's (85 carerra and 91 Targa) and two 928S4's and now an OB... I enjoyed my 911's but the 928 is and always be my favorite sports car of all time. I have had plenty of great cars, from NSX, Vettes (86 and 91), 840, 500SL, 540 Sport , All of them great, but none ever stole my heart like the 928. It baffles me why these cars would not be rising faster in value then they do, but then again I am happy I can buy such cars for such a steal of a price IMHO. I always could sell my 928's as fast as I sold my 911's. Clearly the press is clueless.

I read the 8 series article and I dont think it was so bad. I think sometimes its hard for enthusiasts to be objective with stuff like this. The enthusiast community around any classic model is unlikely to ever be satisfied with a "normal" persons view of it.

The fact is most of these cars that many of us love (the 928, the 8 series, the NSX, etc) were actually never commercially successful in any real way. Always lots of reasons why that is, but you cant really get away from the fact that the primary reason is many folks found "something" lacking.

Years and years on, that sentiment will almost certainly persist. Unless the article is written *by* an enthusiast (which would be stacking the deck kind of), there will always be a focus on the aspects of the car that likely caused it to not be a commerical success.

That's a great point of view, mlambert. I for one never thought of it that way.

Many cases only one individual in the herd decides anything and the rest just moo and follow. Plenty of people buy a car not for the car, but for the image of what sort of people buy the car.

I saw that article as well. There were also a few minor errors in it. It was nice that they did an article, but it was pretty typical of most 928 articles.
