I think there is a release tab on them but it is not obvious to me. After release, is it just a matter of gripping the top and bottom with the fingers and rocking and pulling if off?

Dunno about the earlier CE panels, but for S4+, there are actually two 'tabs' holding them in- One at the top of each connector, which you can gently pry up (old and brittle does not begin to describe how old and brittle they become....) The other is a red pull-tab that hides in the wiring along the bottom of the panel, between connectors K and L (L and M? J and K? whatever). When you pull it out, it moves a sliding bar that 'unlocks' the bottom of the connectors.
Then you just pull the connector straight out.
Then you just pull the connector straight out.

It is as Rob says - however if you do rock them up & down to get them out you will very likely snap off the top retaining clip - they do get really brittle with age. There are 2 holes in protrusions on each side of the shell - offset a little - so either use a puller hook on these alternately or make up a puller tool with a paperclip bent with a hook at each end through these loops and gently pull them out - unhook the top retainer with a thin piece of plastic slipped under it.... early on I broke many of these top clips but with this technique almost never...
