I finally got back to the S4. Thanks to each of you for your recommendations. Without boring everyone, the problem appears to have been a loose electrical plug connection up front next to the receiver dryer. When I started it and turned on the air, after fooling around up there, it blew cold! Shocked me. Now that that problem is resolved, the Hot/Cold control on the dash is VERY slow to respond especially going from hot to cold. What should I be looking for?
Thank you again for all the advice. Where would we be without this forum - lost in the desert.

Success! I'm now getting COLD. Thanks to all supporters.
Now, when moving the temperature control on the dash from COLD to HOT (or the reverse), the result is a very slow temperature response - sometimes as long as 10 minutes. Where should I look for the cause? Thanks again.

Check the mixer motor behind the driver's side console cover. It's a black box with an arm. With the A/C on, put the slider to full cold and watch for movement, then put it to full hot and watch it. It shouldn't take more than ~10 seconds for the arm to move all the way from one side to the other.

So is a 928 (any MY) AC system something that any local AC shop should be able to charge or are there special skills required that are best left to a porsche savy technician?

Glad to hear it was minor electrical, since the price of R12 is higher than GOLD these days.

That won't go over big if you blew the anniversary necklace to use on a freon refill

Thanks, Dan, for your suggestion on the cause of my slow transition. I have removed the (carpeted) vertical console cover next to my right knee. Is that the correct one? Looking inside I see a black box with a long wire connector but no arm extending from it. I've taken a photo. Is there a way to attach it to the thread
