Jacksonville 928 on CL
http://jacksonville.craigslist.org/cto/1265858018.html
Looking for my first project and spooted this on on CL. I emailed for more info and got this reply.
brick red, mileage: 105,000 but not accaurate, seats=color beige, no rips, carpet= new, not original, nice sound system, new battery, dashboard= covered with plastic dash cap, automatic, good tires, changed fuel pump last year, new spark plug wires, new fuel regulators, flushed cooling system last year and changed thermostat, does not overheat, changed transmission pan gasket, new mass air flow. ac not working. daily driver, rear muffler bypass-sounds good. you should see this. no pics.
Is anyone in the JAX area familiar with this car, its 11 hours round trip from Fort Walton Beach so hard to go look at. An 84 red/beige auto is pretty much exactly what I am looking for, just looking for some input as to whether it looks like its worth a gamble. I fight Lord Lucas Prince of Darkness weekly keeping my Range Rover on the road so I am not afraid to get stuck in.
thanks
Bob

84 AT is what I suggest for people looking for a reliable cheap 928, 84 has some nice features of the newer models, but still non interference, and the AT are both cheaper to buy and tend to be cheaper to own with few issues.
What sort of things do you neglect if you live in FL with no AC? Much nicer cars are selling for little more than this project. I say shop harder.

Hi Bob,
Did the owner send you photos? If so, could you post them. Maybe I have seen the ad before.
Also, did you get the VIN number and check it on Carfax?

I hadn't thought about the neglect=no A/C, in fact I wasn't that worried about it since I am licensed and have all the equipment for A/C work.
Joe
No, he stated "no pics" in hie email reply. I haven't got the VIN yet, I was hoping someone knew the car and could save me some time.
I think I'll keep looking, maybe he'll drop the price . With Range Rovers the rule is if you want a $4000 truck, buy a $2000 one and spend $2000 on fixing everything thats probably needs doing. You will then have a fairly reliable vehicle, baring any disasters. Should I use the same mentality when 928 shopping? I'm looking at 4-5K for purchase and initial repairs. Is it better to shop for a 4-5K car and hope that it doesn't need TB/waterpump, vac lines, fuel lines, green wire etc or buy a 2-3K knowing that you will have to spend another 2K getting it on the road and safe.
thanks

Hi Bob,
I am not familiar with this car, but with a million people in the five county area, that probably means little. Still, with it being his daily driver I'd think I might have seen it on the road as much as I drive each year, or at least heard of it.
Would make me wonder in this age of a camera in most phones & digital cameras less than $100 why someone selling a car wouldn't have any pics of it. Unless they were just completely technologically inept. If that's the reason, then it might scare me away from buying a 928 from someone like that unless I knew who their mechanic was. I doubt I would even think of looking at one unless I saw pics 1st & even then, photos can be oh so misleading.
I'd say if you do not know the history on any 928 you purchase, especially regarding the TB/WP on an interference engine, have it done asap. If you get more serious about this one, I could possibly go look at it for you & I could definitely give you the name & # of a local shop that has worked on all 3 sharks we've owned & he could do a ppi for you.
Good luck!

I have to agree with Mel, if they cant produce a photo or two at least, there might be something wrong with the car. The VIN will give you some info, specially if it has a salvage title, reported accident or bad odometer. But these days without a cell phone shot and who services the car, I wouldnt make a long trip to see it.
