Default Help me diagnose this new sound

Driving ('91 S4) to my office this am. I noticed what I first thought was the sound of a motorcycle at medium idle. I rolled down the window and there was no cycle around. 'Rolled windows back up and realized that it was coming from the center of the dash; shut down AC and fan controls and the noise continued. The noise sounds like a fan hitting some kind of shroud. The noise goes away under hard acceleration and returns when throttle is backed off. Saturday I drove spiritedly for ~ 100 miles with our local Wichita Porsche club. 'Any ideas? Thanks for your assistance, Rod

That sounds about right--mine sounded like a 6th grader playing clarinet though, not a motorcycle. Some people have found that the inside temp sensor fan (mounted behind the little grill on the center console) gives out and makes some interesting sounds too. There are threads about pulling these out and doing R&R on them. You might be able to tell if it's coming from the temp sensor fan if you have someone other than the driver place their ear against the temp sensor grill to see if the sound seems to be coming from there.
