Default Why All the Drama + Technical Question?

1) I thought all of the drama was on the 944 board

2) Just to keep it technical: How do you take the flywheel off to get at the PB to get at clutch disc #1 on an early/OB/dual disc 5spd? The motor is on a floor dolly and the clutch pack, I-Shaft (thing), etc, are off and the flywheel is exposed with clutch plate number 1 floating behind it. Thanks. Michael

I think a photo is needed to clarify what you are looking at .....plus removing the flywheel does not give you any better access to the pilot bearing it is still stuck into the end of the crankshaft. If you wish to change the rear main crank seal then the flywheel needs to come off.

Yes, thank you James. I will take pictures this weekend and post. I removed the clutch pack and accessories and wasn't really sure how to go forward. I was quite surprised to see another clutch disc as I have only seen single, 944 clutches. Michael

Edit: Yes, sorry, I meant rear main seal. Michael

The pressure plate discs one and two plus the intermadiate plate all should come off together you have a pin centered clutch assembly and the three dowels from the flywheel probably are holding the intermediate plate (where the teeth for the starter are located) . You need to drive the pins toward the front of the engine . If you were trying to do this in the car you would never have gotten the pressure plate out. Also you will need to compress the pressure plate and put some bent nails under the heads of the three large rivet looking things or you will have a hard time gbetting the bolts started to compress the pressure plate.

Thanks James. I am not at the flywheel at all as you surmise. I just read this DIY: http://members.rennlist.com/jeifert/DD-CLUTCH-REP.html. Looks like I should have pulled all of it together. Anyway, I saw the pins in the WSM and will now look for them on the IP and use your suggestion to tap them forward.

Would it be better to bolt the clutch assembly back on?

I never worked on a clutch in the open light before. It is a whole new perspective for me. Sorry for the ignorance. Michael
