Low Blower Fan Speed (with new resistor pack)

Here you go. You can see what Alan was talking about rewiring the harness to fit the later resistor pack by swaping the two wire pin 6 with pin 8 and removing the jumper between pins 4 and 8.

Old post, but can anyone confirm that the 94/95 GTS resistor pack can be modified to fit earlier cars?
I'd like to use one on my '89 as I've got a GTS AC head unit in the car, and it bugs me that I can't turn the fan off. The late-GTS version turns the fan off completely on setting 0 on the fan ****.
I have the GTS HVAC control unit in the car because I needed the ability to force recirculate - there are some road tunnels under Sydney with serious air quality issues.

The wiring looks like it can be swapped in the pins for the connector (and colour/gauge of the wires will be correct for each fan speed), so its just a question of whether the late resistor pack is physically compatible with the earlier mounting location and harness connector.
If anyone has actually looked at them side by side that would be good to know.

I would fix the photo links in my OP, but I guess it's too old to edit. I used to use "www.doncarter.us", but didn't maintain the domain. The pics are still on the web server, just need to be able to replace the domain with an IP address, o well... Maybe a admin could do a search replace?

Hilton - the head unit has nothing to do with the fan off in speed 0 mode - that is controlled by the resistor pack configuration only.
If the later 94/95 model fits the plenum hole you can make it work electrically - the plug is the same - the physical fit is the only question. I think that is also the same but can't be totally sure...
The GTS head unit is actually the same as the late S4 head units ('90-'91) - they have the recirculate mode too. Any year with an adapted 94/95 resistor pack (if it can be done) will be able to achieve a true off in speed 0 - the blower switch is the same all years. NB The blower switch is a modular element - its not really an integrated part of the HVAC head unit at all - it just bolts in and has its own separate connector.
However I will say that the difference between low speed operation and off is not very much at all - it is a very low speed indeed...
In recirculate mode - you do always get AC on and always get the defroster flap open - so airflow to your face via the directional vents drops Vs. vent only mode.
It would be much better if it were just a dedicated seperate recirculate switch IMO.

Roger, I thought the pack I got from you was for 89-93 originally. Sounds like the 94-95 pack is very different. Looking at the wiring diagrams, the 89-93 is only slightly different and many here have successfully rewired the plug and used this pack with success on older cars.

Even for those without a GTS control unit, it would make a cheaper replacement, as I believe the 94/95 01 part is slightly cheaper too?

Resurrecting an old post on Fan Blower Resister Pack
For my 89, can I retrofit the '94 - '95 (928 616 101 01) newer version that doesn't have to be in the plenum?
Does anyone have the pinouts to make this happen? I've seen it for the pre-89 cars but not for 89 - 93
Please and thanks

In the later GTS cars with this module - it is placed where your intensive washer tank lives. Plus your plenum has a resistor pack sized hole in it.
Electrically it can be done

Thank you Alan. Do you still have the pin out instructions for the wire swap to make it work for my 89? I only see it for the pre 89 cars.
Please and thank you

Fred - here you go:
’89 – ’93 vehicle – installing ’94-’95 Blower Pack
Replacing the Blower Resistor pack in a ’89-’93 vehicle (with original wiring) with the latest ‘94/’95 GTS resistor pack version. These instructions are not suitable for any other retrofit cases.
Make changes to the wiring loom connector that attaches to the Blower resistor pack. The resistor pack is located in the blower plenum below the plastic cowl between the bulkhead and firewall just in front of the windshield. The plug pulls off and the resistor pack must be swapped via removal of the rubber boot connecting the plenum to the blower fan motor. Only the connectors in the loom mounted socket are changed. See the pin ID’s on the resistor pack. Once the socket has been separated the pins may be swapped easily – no re-soldering should be needed.
1) White wire stays on Pin1 (no change)
2) Move White/Green wire from Pin 5 to Pin 3
3) Move White/Blue wire from Pin 7 to Pin 4
4) Move the 2 Black wires from Pin 8 to Pin 2
5) Move the Red wire on pin 4 to Pin 5 (it will not connect to anything (0 speed) - but its tidy this way)
